A Quarter Century of Hoops and Heart: The Befana Basketball tournament Returns
Get ready for the annual slam dunk of youth basketball! The 25th edition of the Befana Basketball Tournament is set to tip off from January 3rd to 6th, bringing together 43 talented teams from across 14 provinces. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever, with 149 thrilling matches taking place across 11 courts in the Veneto region.
This year’s tournament boasts a truly national flavor, welcoming nine teams from beyond the region. Powerhouses like Virtus Siena, Mens Sana Basketball Academy, and Alto Milanese will be vying for the championship alongside local favorites like pallacanestro Limena, Basket Alta Padovana, and Virtus padova. The tournament’s legacy stretches back to 1999, when Leopoldo Carraro envisioned a platform to celebrate youth basketball while fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship. Over the past 24 years, nearly 1,000 teams have graced the courts, transforming the Befana Tournament into a beloved tradition.
Young athletes will be divided into eight groups, battling it out in a round-robin format before advancing to the knockout stages. The Gazelles, meanwhile, will compete in a single group, culminating in a thrilling final showdown. Both the Eaglets and Gazelles will have their championship dreams decided at the prestigious Kioene Arena, with the 1st and 2nd place finals scheduled for 2:00 PM and 3:30 PM respectively.
Beyond the competition, the tournament offers a unique experience for participating teams. Out-of-town squads will be hosted at the Limena school, fostering a sense of community and shared experience. Imagine evenings filled with laughter, shared meals, and the excitement of bonding with teammates.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Falcone e Borsellino theater in Limena will host screenings of electrifying NBA highlights, followed by the conventional Befana stocking distribution.
But the Befana Tournament is more than just sport and fun; it’s a beacon of generosity. Each year, the organizing committee selects a worthy cause to support. This year, for the second consecutive year, the tournament will champion Amani Education odv, an institution founded by former Olimpia Milano and Italian national team player Giampaolo Ricci.Amani Education Odv is dedicated to building a secondary school in Tanzania in collaboration with the Assumption Sisters, a religious order committed to education and empowerment.
The tournament’s success is a testament to the collaborative spirit of the region. The municipalities of Padua, Limena, piazzola sul Brenta, Villafranca Padovana, Noventa Padovana, Camposampiero, Santa Maria di Sala, Mirano, Rubano, and Mestrino have joined forces to make this event a reality. The Veneto Region and the Italian Basketball Federation have also lent their support, recognizing the tournament’s significance in promoting youth sports and community engagement.
