A Brutal Attack and a Trial in Bergamo: Unraveling the story
A family of Indian origin residing in the Lower Bergamo region found themselves at the center of a terrifying ordeal. The father, mother, and young son endured a relentless campaign of harassment, including threatening phone calls, surveillance, and even physical assaults. Five individuals of Indian descent now face trial, accused of a range of offenses, from stalking and aggravated assault to attempted murder.
The horrifying events unfolded in August 2019. According to prosecutors, one of the accused, HL, intercepted the victim, JS, who was driving with his wife and son. A second vehicle arrived, carrying the remaining four defendants armed with an arsenal of weapons: iron bars, baseball bats, brass knuckles, and a knife. They launched a vicious attack on JS, beating him mercilessly with fists, feet, and the weapons until he lost consciousness. The brutality left him with a fractured jaw and foaming at the mouth.
Adding to the horror, one of the assailants, AS, allegedly attempted to run over the unconscious JS with his car. Only the intervention of JS’s wife, who bravely stepped between the vehicle and her husband, prevented a perhaps fatal outcome. She too was struck with a stick and required hospitalization, along with her husband. Their prognosis: seven days for the wife and a staggering 40 days for JS. their young son, traumatized by the scene, remained in the car, weeping.He later underwent psychological counseling to cope with the trauma.During the December 19th hearing, HL presented his version of events. He claimed to have encountered JS, who was recounting an argument with other compatriots. Suddenly, AS arrived with three others, including HL’s brother. AS allegedly emerged from the car, wielding a stick, and struck JS in the face. When JS’s wife intervened, she was also assaulted.
When questioned by prosecutor Laura Cocucci about the motive behind the altercation, HL responded, “Because AS was acting like a bully.”
LV,brother of another defendant,also testified. He stated that he was being driven home when he saw his brother engaged in a conversation with JS. AS then stopped the car, confronted JS, and initiated the attack with a stick. JS’s wife screamed and swore at the assailants. In the months following the incident, LV claimed to have received threatening calls from JS’s friends, even from Canada, blaming him for the attack despite his insistence on his innocence.
The trial is set to resume on January 9th, when the prosecution and defense will present their closing arguments. This case highlights the devastating consequences of violence and the importance of seeking justice for victims.
