The retirement season of ‘King of Clay Court’ Rafael Nadal (Spain) will be produced as a documentary. Foreign media such as Tennis.com and The Athletic reported on the 19th (Korean time) that “Netflix is producing a documentary series featuring Nadal’s 2024 season.”
Produced by Skydance Sports and directed by Jack Heingering, this film focuses on Nadal’s final season before retirement. The official title and broadcast schedule have not yet been confirmed.
Nadal said through Netflix, “I never thought I would make something like this,” and “I knew it was an amazing project when I was contacted by David Ellison.” “Everyone will be able to see my tennis career and especially the final years,” he added. “It will also show how my life and tennis career has developed.”
Nadal’s 2024 season got off to a promising start in Brisbane, Australia, but he withdrew from the Australian Open after complaining of hip pain after his match against Jordan Thompson. Afterwards, at the French Open, he lost in the first round to Alexander Zverev. His overall record at Roland Garros is 116 wins and 4 losses.
Spain’s proud tennis hero left the court after this year’s Davis Cup. At the Paris Olympics, he played his last match against his old rival Novak Djokovic, but lost. After suffering a one-sided loss to Hubert Hurkacz in the Rome tournament, he criticized himself, saying, “It was a disaster.”
Matthew Futterman, tennis reporter for The Athletic, said, “Nadal’s final season was a series of emotional struggles,” and added, “His trademark fierce rotational movements that generate power and spin seemed to have lost their power.”
Nadal emerged in the early 2000s and dominated the men’s tennis world for 20 years along with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. He won 22 major tournaments and reached the top of the French Open 14 times. He won a total of 92 tour competitions and left behind a record of 1,080 wins and 228 losses.
Along with Nadal’s documentary, Netflix also plans to release the series ‘My Way’ featuring Carlos Alcaraz in 2025. The previously produced tennis documentary ‘Break Point’ ended after two seasons due to low viewership.
