A festive 5K: Onís and García Dominate the 37th Nochebuena Race
The 37th annual Nochebuena Race,affectionately known as the “Chocolate Santa” race due to the festive chocolate Santa figurines awarded to all finishers,saw impressive victories from Alejandro Onís of Oriente Atletismo and Lucía garcía of Independiente. Onís secured his third win in this event, crossing the finish line in an impressive 14 minutes and 30 seconds. Juanjo Somoano, Onís’ teammate from Oriente Atletismo, followed closely behind with a time of 14:52, while David Fernández Ginzo secured third place with a time of 14:56.
In the women’s race, Lucía García dominated, finishing with a commanding lead of nearly a minute over the second-place runner. Her winning time was 16:42. Andrea Trigo of Independiente secured second place with a time of 17:34, and Llara Prieto of Gijón Atletismo rounded out the podium with a time of 18:21. Interestingly, both Onís and García are coached by Nacho Lacarra, highlighting the effectiveness of his training program.
Organized by the Estadio gijón club in collaboration with the Municipal Sports Board, the Nochebuena race attracted 2,000 participants eager to tackle the 5-kilometer course stretching from Avenida de Albert Einstein to the Las Mestas Sports complex.
Alongside the main race, shorter distances were offered for younger participants, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.
