Alexander Zverev would like to finally take the final step and, in addition to winning the Grand Slam, also climb to number one in the world rankings. However, the best German tennis player needs a lot of patience for this, because Jannik Sinner has a large cushion.

Alexander Zverev can’t afford any dropouts for number one.

A few days ago, Mischa Zverev confirmed his brother’s goal for 2025: Alexander Zverev not only wants to win his first Grand Slam title, but also finally become number one in the world. It may come as no surprise that one goal is strongly linked to the other objective.

But upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that the Hamburg native’s first major triumph is likely to be easier, at least in the coming year. Primus Jannik Sinner’s lead at the turn of the year was a whopping 3,915 points. A lead that Alexander Zverev, as the first pursuer, could only slowly reduce if Jannik Sinner does not experience any drop in performance.

Alexander Zverev depends on Jannik Sinner

At the beginning of the year, Sinner had 2,000 points to defend as defending champion at the Australian Open, but Alexander Zverev can only make up a limited number of points Down Under with 1,135 points from 2024 if the world number one continues to perform so dominantly.

It will probably take until autumn before the window of opportunity for Alexander Zverev opens a little further. Jannik Sinner also scored 900 points on the pitch, where the German number one only collected 400 points in Halle and Wimbledon last year.

Of course, the threat of a ban for the South Tyrolean, which the CAS will not decide on until 2025, would completely change the initial situation. But there is also a high probability that there will be competition again from the lower places.
