Algerian Boxing Prodigy Mustafa Abdou Sets Sights on Olympic Glory
Emerging Algerian boxing talent Mustafa Abdou, recently crowned the “Best Hopeful Athlete of 2024” by the Algerian Press Service (APS), views this prestigious award as a powerful motivator for his burgeoning career.
“This recognition will fuel my determination to train harder and strive for more victories, ultimately bringing honor to Algeria on the international stage,” Abdou shared with APS after receiving the coveted trophy. He emphasized that the bronze medal he secured at the 2024 Junior World Championships in Colorado, USA, played a significant role in his selection. This achievement, he believes, will serve as a springboard for future success.
Abdou, only 18 years old, dominated the “Best Hopeful” rankings with an impressive 90 points, securing the top spot 17 times. He outpaced fellow athletes Nadia Katabi (weightlifting) and Akram Chakhchouk (boxing),who garnered 32 and 18 points respectively.
His bronze medal win in the under 75 kg category at the World Championships marked his debut on the international stage. While he triumphed over Czech boxer Martin Roshnak in the quarter-finals, he ultimately fell to American Joseph Owningwa in the semi-finals.
Reflecting on his experience, Abdou acknowledged the high level of competition and the need for specialized preparation, mental fortitude, and experience to excel at such events.

Those are qualities that can’t be taught.
Moderator: His bronze medal win was a landmark achievement, marking his debut on the international stage. What did you learn about Mustafa as a competitor during that tournament?
Saïd Kadous: The World Championships were a real test of character for Mustafa. he faced tough opponents, experienced fighters who pushed him to his limits. He showed incredible resilience, bouncing back strong after his loss in the semi-finals. It solidified what I already knew – Mustafa has the mental fortitude to compete at the highest level.
Moderator: Now, Mustafa has his sights set on the 2028 Olympic Games. Many see him as a potential medal contender. What are your thoughts on his Olympic aspirations?
Saïd Kadous: The 2028 Olympics are definately a realistic goal. Mustafa has the talent, the drive, and the support system to make it happen. But, the road to Paris is paved with challenges. He needs to continue to refine his skills, increase his power, and gain experience at the elite level. It’s going to be a demanding journey, but I have no doubt Mustafa is capable of achieving his Olympic dreams.
Moderator: Some might say that Mustafa, at only 18 years old, is peaking too early.Do you worry about burnout or complacency?
Saïd Kadous: That’s a valid concern, but Mustafa is a driven young man. He’s constantly seeking improvement, challenging himself to be better every day. Our training regime is carefully structured to avoid burnout and prioritize his long-term development.
Moderator: Let’s talk strategy for a moment. Mustafa is known for his skillful evasion and precise punches. What areas are you focusing on to strengthen his game even further?
Saïd Kadous: We’re working on expanding his offensive arsenal, adding more variety and power behind his punches. We’re also focusing on improving his footwork and ring generalship. The goal is to make him a more well-rounded fighter, capable of adapting to different opponents and fighting styles.
