American and ski legend Lindsey Vonn confirmed Friday that she will make her return to the World Cup during the stage in Saint-Moritz (Switzerland) on December 21 and 22, at the age of 40 and after almost six years of retirement. “She’s back,” Red Bull, the skier’s sponsor, wrote on Instagram, posting a video where we see the former world No.1 saying with a smile: “it seems that St. Moritz is a nice place to this time of year.”
Lindsey Vonn, former holder of the women’s World Cup victory record with 82 successes, has taken on the crazy challenge of returning to the highest level, almost six years after retiring at the World Cups in Are (Sweden). in February 2019. Victim of numerous injuries during her career, Vonn underwent surgery in the spring to replace part of her right knee, victim of tricompartmental degeneration, with a titanium prosthesis.
Before being able to return to the world circuit – thanks to new regulations which allow former skiing glories to return to the World Cup in advantageous conditions – Vonn had to take part in races on the secondary circuit at the beginning of December.
She competed in two super-Gs at Copper Mountain (United States) last week and finished 19th and 24th, just over two seconds behind the winner each time. “It was a success. Some say I was slow but I think it was great,” she said on Instagram on Wednesday. Before returning to competition in Switzerland, the American will be usher this weekend at the World Cup in Beaver Creek (United States), where a downhill and a super-G will take place.
