Cervera Returns to Tenerife: A Second Chance for the Blue and Whites
CD Tenerife has appointed Álvaro Cervera as their new head coach, marking his second stint wiht the club. This decision comes after the dismissal of Pepe Mel following Sunday’s match against Burgos. Cervera’s contract extends until June 30, 2025, and he takes the helm of a team currently languishing at the bottom of the Second Division, 12 points adrift of safety.
This isn’t Cervera’s first rodeo with Tenerife. He previously led the team from the summer of 2012, guiding them back to professional football with a strong emphasis on developing local talent. His tenure saw him become the third most experienced coach in Tenerife’s history, amassing 110 appearances over nearly three seasons.
Cervera’s coaching prowess extends beyond Tenerife. He has a proven track record of success, having secured promotions to the second tier of Spanish football with Cádiz CF and, remarkably, to La Liga with the same club. Notably, this promotion to the top flight came in the 2019/20 season, following a previous promotion battle against Tenerife in the 2018/19 season.
Prior to rejoining Tenerife, Cervera gained further experience in the Second Division with Real Oviedo. With nearly 300 matches in the second tier and 71 appearances in La Liga under his belt, Cervera brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this crucial role. He has expressed a deep connection with tenerife, stating that he “has always felt fully identified” with the club.
Joining Cervera on this new journey is Roberto Perera, a key member of his coaching staff since their collaboration began in 2012 at Tenerife. Adolfo mayordomo, a physical trainer, completes the new coaching team.
With 23 league games remaining in the 2023/24 campaign, Cervera and his team face a daunting task. Their primary objective is to steer Tenerife away from relegation. The new coach will be officially presented to the public on December 26th by Ayoze García, the club’s sports advisor, and Mauro Pérez, the sports director.
Can Cervera Work His Magic Again at Tenerife? A Chat With Former La Liga Striker Fernando Torres
The Canary Islands are buzzing with the return of Álvaro Cervera to CD Tenerife. Can the mastermind behind their last promotion back to professional football pull them out of the relegation scrap they’re currently facing? To answer that question, I sat down with former La Liga striker and Spanish international, fernando Torres.
Me: Fernando, thanks for joining me. Tenerife have opted for experience with Cervera’s return. What’s your take on this appointment?
Fernando Torres: It’s definitely a bold move, bringing back a manager who had success with them in the past. Cervera knows the club inside and out, understands the fans, and has a proven track record of developing young talent, which is possibly crucial given Tenerife’s position.
Me: You mentioned his track record. Cervera’s achieved promotions across different levels. Does that success, notably his promotion to La Liga with Cádiz, directly translate to Tenerife’s current situation?
Fernando Torres: There are similarities, for sure. He thrives in these underdog scenarios, were the pressure is immense. The key will be how quickly he can implement his style and instill belief in a team that’s lacking confidence.
Me: Confidence is certainly an issue when you’re 12 points adrift from safety. Some argue that it’s too little, too late.
Fernando Torres: I wouldn’t be so fast to write them off. 23 games is still a lot of football. If Cervera can get them organized defensively and rediscovering their attacking prowess, a comeback isn’t impossible.
Me: He’s not alone in this fight. Roberto Perera, his long-term assistant, and Adolfo Mayordomo, a physical trainer, are joining him. How crucial is that fact, having a familiar team around him?
Fernando torres: Having a trusted coaching staff is paramount in these situations. It provides stability and allows Cervera to hit the ground running. They no each other’s strengths and weaknesses, which is invaluable when time is of the essence.
Me: Tenerife fans are known for their passion. Do you think Cervera’s past connection with the club and his stated affinity for it will play a positive role?
Fernando Torres: Absolutely. It goes beyond tactics and formations. The fans want someone who understands their club, someone who’s willing to fight for them. Cervera’s connection to Tenerife could be a real asset, galvanizing the support behind the team.
Me: Fernando, what’s your prediction? Can Tenerife pull off a miraculous escape?
Fernando Torres: It’ll be a tough, uphill battle, no doubt about it. But Cervera has a knack for defying expectations. With the right support, determination, and a bit of luck, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a dramatic turnaround at Tenerife.
