Ana María Rendón, a name synonymous with Colombian archery, has etched her legacy in the sport’s history. Born in Medellín in 1986, Rendón’s journey began in 1994, and by 2002, she was already making waves on the international stage. Her early success, including six gold medals at a Continental Archery Championship at just 18 years old, foreshadowed a career filled with remarkable achievements.
Rendón’s trophy cabinet boasts an impressive collection of medals from prestigious competitions. She has secured seven medals at the Pan American Games, including two team golds in Rio 2007 and Toronto 2015. Her individual silver in Toronto 2015 and a mixed team silver in Lima 2019 further highlight her versatility and skill.
Beyond the Pan American Games, Rendón has dominated the Central American and Caribbean Games, claiming two golds in Mayagüez 2010 and Veracruz 2014, and adding a silver in San Salvador 2023. Her consistent performance in the Bolivarian Games and Pan American archery Championships has resulted in an impressive eight gold medals across various competitions.
In a pivotal moment for Colombian archery,rendón secured a coveted Olympic spot for her nation at the 2023 Santiago Pan American Games by reaching the semifinals. This achievement, coupled with a team bronze medal, held special importance for the seasoned athlete.
“Archery instills perseverance, acceptance, and faith,” Rendón shared after securing her place in Paris 2024.”My journey is far from over. My ultimate goal is an Olympic medal. I’ve faced numerous challenges, but I believe in my potential to reach the podium.”
At 38, Rendón is preparing for what coudl be her final olympic appearance. Representing Colombia in her fourth Olympic Games is an honor and a dream realized. While her best Olympic results to date are a ninth-place team finish in Rio 2016 and a sixteenth-place individual finish in Beijing 2008, Rendón remains focused on achieving her ultimate goal: an Olympic medal.
Rendón’s path hasn’t been without its hurdles. In 2022, she openly discussed a mental health crisis, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing well-being.”I’ve been working on rediscovering the joy in archery and managing the pressure,” she revealed after receiving a lifetime achievement award from Acord Antioquia in December 2023.

Ana María: It’s my pleasure to be here.
You’ve had an absolutely stellar career, Ana María. Your trophy cabinet is overflowing with medals from Pan American Games, Central American and Caribbean Games, and countless othre prestigious competitions. When you look back at your journey, what stands out the most?
Ana María: It’s truly been an incredible journey, filled with both triumphs and challenges. I think what stands out most is the sheer joy of competing, of pushing myself to be the best I can be, and representing my country on the world stage.
Your recent qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics is a testament to your unwavering dedication. At 38, this could be your final Olympic appearance. Does that thought add any extra pressure or motivation?
ana María: It definitely adds a layer of importance to this Olympic cycle. Knowing that Paris could be my swansong motivates me to leave everything on the field, you no? I want to make it count, not just for myself, but for my country and for all the young athletes who look up to me.
you’ve been very open about the mental health challenges you’ve faced throughout your career. You even took some time away from the sport to focus on your well-being. How critically important is it to prioritize mental health in the world of professional sports?
Ana María: It’s absolutely crucial. For a long time, mental health was a taboo subject in sports. Athletes were expected to be strong and stoic, but the reality is that we are human beings with emotions and vulnerabilities.
I think it’s vital that we continue to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and create a more supportive environment for athletes to seek help when they need it.
Your message of resilience and perseverance is truly inspiring. What would you say to young athletes who are just starting out in their chosen sport?
Ana María: Never give up on your dreams. There will be ups and downs, setbacks and challenges along the way, but it’s important to stay focused on your goals and believe in yourself. Surround yourself with people who support you and never be afraid to ask for help.
Ana María, what are your expectations for Paris 2024? Is that Olympic medal still the ultimate driving force?
Ana María: Absolutely. I’m going to Paris with one goal in mind: To win an Olympic medal.I know it won’t be easy, but I’m training harder than ever and I’m determined to make my dream a reality.
