Aryna Sabalenka Sets Sights on Australian Open Three-Peat
Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning world number one, is gearing up for another dominant season. After a stellar 2024 that saw her clinch the Australian Open and US Open titles, the Belarusian powerhouse is aiming for a historic three-peat in Melbourne.
Sabalenka’s love for Australia is undeniable. She thrives in the energetic atmosphere and feels a strong connection with the passionate fans. “I always come to Australia hungry and ready,” she shared, highlighting the unique support she receives Down Under.
The 26-year-old is currently fine-tuning her game in Brisbane, using the WTA 500 tournament (December 29 – January 5) as a springboard for the Australian Open. Sabalenka sees this event as a crucial testing ground for new strategies and techniques. Last year, she reached the final in Brisbane, falling to Elena Rybakina in straight sets.
While Sabalenka enjoyed a remarkable 2024, she remains focused on continuous advancement. She acknowledges areas like her serve and volley game that require further refinement. despite achieving a career-best 62.8% first serve percentage in 2024, she believes there’s room for growth. Similarly, while her double fault rate dropped significantly to 2.9 per match in 2024, she’s determined to further minimize unforced errors.
As the top seed at the Australian Open (January 12-26), Sabalenka carries the weight of expectation. A accomplished title defense would etch her name in history, making her the first woman since Martina Hingis (1997-1999) to achieve a three-peat in Melbourne. The stage is set for another thrilling chapter in Sabalenka’s already illustrious career.
Can Aryna sabalenka Make History in Melbourne?
Welcome back, tennis fans, to another edition of “Courtside Chats!” Today, we have a true legend of the game joining us, former World No. 3 and Grand Slam champion, Mats Wilander. Mats, thank you so much for being here.
Mats: Thanks for having me, always a pleasure to talk tennis!
Moderator: Let’s jump right in. Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning world number one, is gunning for a historic three-peat at the australian Open. As someone who knows a thing or two about Grand Slam success, what are your thoughts on her chances?
Mats: Aryna’s a force, no doubt. She’s the world number one for a reason. Her power and explosiveness are unmatched right now. But a three-peat, that’s a whole different beast. The pressure’s immense, and other players will be hungry to derail her.
Moderator: We saw her dominate in 2024, winning both the Australian Open and US Open. But she still believes there’s room for improvement, particularly with her serve and volley. What areas do you think Sabalenka needs to focus on to solidify her status as the best in the world?
mats: It’s admirable that she’s not complacent.Even at the top, there’s always room to grow. While her serve percentage is extraordinary, adding more consistency to her
volley would make her even more hazardous. It’d give her more options at the net and put more pressure on opponents.
Moderator: She’s using the Brisbane tournament as a springboard for Melbourne. Do you think it’s wise to fine-tune her game under the pressure of
competition rather than sticking to purely practice?
Mats: I think it’s a smart move. Competition is the ultimate testing ground. The Brisbane tournament allows her to try out new strategies and
tactics in a real match habitat. It’s invaluable experience, even if it means facing tougher opponents right off the bat.
Moderator: Speaking of tough opponents, do you see anyone capable of stopping Sabalenka’s winning streak in Melbourne?
Mats: There are always challengers. Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, they’ll be right there in the mix. But Sabalenka has that winning mentality, that aura of invincibility. It’s going to be intriguing to see who steps up to the plate.
Moderator: Now, let’s talk history. A three-peat would put her in elite company, alongside Martina Hingis. do you think Sabalenka’s resolute enough to etch her name in the record books?
Mats: Absolutely. She’s got that hunger, that desire to be among the greats. It’s a huge motivator. Three-peating at the Australian Open is a monumental task, but if anyone can do it, it’s Aryna.
Moderator: Aryna Sabalenka’s quest for a three-peat is sure to be one of the most compelling storylines in tennis this year. Thanks so much for sharing your insights, Mats.
