Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Webster, the veteran badminton player who’s turning heads and rewriting expectations in the professional circuit. Webster, welcome to the show.
Webster: It’s a pleasure to be here.
Moderator: Your story is truly inspirational. Stepping onto the professional court without a junior career background, facing players substantially younger, and battling through illness — it’s a testament to sheer grit and determination. What was that initial transition like for you, stepping into this high-stakes world?
Webster: It was a whirlwind, to be honest. Imagine flipping from black-and-white television to high-definition colour – that’s what entering professional badminton felt like! I was entering a world with such a different pace, level of skill, and technological advancement than what I was used to.it was daunting, but incredibly exhilarating.
Moderator: And you’ve certainly made your mark. That first victory on the BWF circuit, defeating Rakesh Sharma, must have been a truly remarkable moment. What was going through your mind during that match?
Webster: I’ll be honest, I was focused, but there was also this overwhelming sense of disbelief simmering beneath the surface. It was a confirmation of everything I’d been working towards, all those gruelling training sessions and sacrifices.
Moderator: Many people argue that simply competing at this level at your age is a victory in itself. How do you balance those external expectations with your own personal goals?
Webster: That’s a question I grapple with often. While I appreciate the admiration, for me, competing isn’t just about age or defying expectations. It’s about pushing myself, testing my limits, and proving that age is just a number when it comes to pursuing your passion.
Moderator: You’ve mentioned your mountaineering experience and how it’s strengthened your mental resilience. can you elaborate on how that translates to your badminton game?
webster: Absolutely. Mountaineering teaches you to persevere through adversity, to push beyond fear and doubt. When you’re facing a treacherous climb, every step is a victory. Similarly, in badminton, every point won against younger, more agile opponents is a testament to my mental fortitude.
moderator: Your dedication extends beyond the court, inspiring fans who identify with your tenacity and your message of inclusivity. What does it mean to you to be a representative for those who yearn to play but might face limitations?
Webster: I beleive everyone deserves a chance to chase their dreams, whatever their age or circumstances. If my story can motivate just one person to pick up a racket, to push beyond perceived limitations, then I’ve achieved something truly special.
