The management of the Australian Open made official this Friday the majority of invitations to the men’s and women’s individual draws of the first major of the course. The most outstanding news is the ‘wild card’ awarded to veteran Stan Wawrinka.
The Swiss, 39 years old and ranked 161 in the ATP rankinglifted the Norman Brookes trophy in the 2014 edition, precisely after defeating the Spanish Rafael Nadal in the final.
Wawrinka could be a rival of the Spanish Davis Cup team in the first round of the finals at the beginning of February (1 and 2) if he is called up by the Swiss captain. The last time Stan put on his country’s jersey was in the 2023 group stage.
The organization of the first ‘major’ also confirmed invitations for many of the Australian tennis players who do not have a good enough classification to enter the draw. It is the case of Tristan Schoolkate, Li Tu, James McCabe, Daria Saville, Ajla Tomljanovic, Emerson Jones, Talia Gibson and Maya Joint.
