On the third day of competition at the U19 European Championships in Ibiza (Spain), the ÖBV athletes were once again able to impress with strong performances. Pascal Cheng and the women’s doubles Sarah Dlapka/Anja Rumpold in particular achieved impressive results. With two ÖBV round of 16 appearances in men’s singles (HE) and women’s doubles (DD), the Austrian team can look back on a successful third day of competition. Tomorrow, Tuesday December 3rd, 2024, there will be more exciting games for the Austrians in the fight for the quarter-finals.

Pascal Cheng (HE) & Sarah Dlapka and Anja Rumpold (DD) are in the round of 16:
Pascal Cheng delivered a thrilling game against number 10 seeded Estonian Andrei Schmidt in the men’s singles. After a hard-fought first set (20:22), Cheng showed strong nerves and took the second set 21:11. The deciding set turned into a real thriller: After a total of eight match points, Cheng prevailed 28:26 and moved into the round of 16. On Tuesday, Cheng will face German Luis Pongratz, who is seeded number 4 in the tournament. This duel promises high tension – it’s about making it to the quarter-finals.

The ÖBV duo Sarah Dlapka and Anja Rumpold impressed in the women’s doubles. They won confidently in two sets against the Estonian pairing Kaisa Liis Lepp/Romili Vakk and moved into the round of 16. The opponents for their next game are Agathe Cuevas and Kathell Desmots-Chacun from France (No. 2 in the tournament).

Out in mixed doubles:
In the mixed doubles, things were less successful for Pascal Cheng and Sarah Dlapka. They had to admit defeat to the number 8 seeded Spanish pairing of Adolfo Lopez and Carmen Maria Jimenez in two sets and were eliminated from the tournament.

Statement from ÖBV youth national coach Daniel Graßmück:
“All in all, a successful day for us today. Since the Spanish opponents in the mixed doubles were superior to us in all areas, it was initially a bad start. But then Pascal was able to win the thriller of the day against the number 10 of the tournament. After leading 18:13, he had to fend off a match point at 20:21 before he was finally able to win 28:26. Anja and Sarah then gave their opponents from Estonia no chance and won safely in two sets. Pascal will play tomorrow against the number 4 of the tournament, Luis Pongratz from Germany. Anja and Sarah will face the No. 2 doubles seed, Desmot-Chacun/Cuevas from France. We will do everything we can to surprise.”
