BAM Seeks New Men’s Doubles Coach: Herry IP Emerges as Top Contender
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is actively searching for a new men’s doubles coach following the departure of Tan Bin Shen. Secretary-General David Kenny Goh confirmed that they have reached out too Herry Iman Pierngadi, a highly respected Indonesian coach, as a potential candidate.
“We have indeed contacted Herry, but a final decision has not yet been made,” Goh told the New Straits Times.
Herry IP, affectionately known as “The Fire Dragon,” expressed his interest in the position, stating that he would consider the offer if it aligned with his expectations.
Besides Herry IP, BAM is also evaluating other prominent coaches, including Denmark’s Mathias Boe and Indonesia’s Flandy Limpele.
“We are still interviewing several other candidates, so the decision-making process will take some time,” Goh explained.
Herry IP boasts an remarkable coaching record, having guided numerous Indonesian men’s doubles pairs to victory on the world stage. His notable protégés include Olympic gold medalists Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya and Hendra setiawan/Markis Kido.

LZii: It’s definitely a tough choice. Boe has strong tactical knowlege, while Limpele understands the Asian badminton landscape well. BAM needs someone who can bridge the gap between Malaysia’s traditional strengths and the evolving demands of the modern game. They need a coach who can inspire,motivate,and push these players to their absolute limits.
Moderator: Inspiring a winning mentality. I think that’s the crux of it! Now, some might argue that bringing in a foreign coach can disrupt team dynamics. Do you think there’s truth to that, or do you see Herry IP’s Indonesian background as an advantage?
LZii: it’s a double-edged sword. A foreign coach can bring fresh perspectives and ideas, but there’s always an adjustment period. language barriers, cultural nuances – these can be hurdles. However, if Herry IP can build trust and rapport with the players, his Indonesian experience could be valuable. It allows him to understand the mindset and pressures faced by Asian badminton players.
