*The Women’s Secretariat promotes this initiative as part of its commitment to build processes of economic autonomy and break cycles of gender violence
Cuernavaca, Mor. (December 4). – Within the framework of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence, the Women’s Secretariat held the workshop “Rolling Together: Reparation and Autonomy”, taught by Lupita Esquivel, with the aim of providing female motorcyclists with practical knowledge in basic mechanics as a step towards their independence and empowerment.
“Independence begins with knowledge, knowing how to take care of ourselves and our work or transportation tools is a transformative act of freedom. In Morelos, we continue to support the empowerment of women, because every advance in their autonomy is a step towards a more just and equal world,” said Clarisa Gómez Manrique, head of the Women’s Secretariat.
During the workshop, participants acquired essential technical skills that strengthen their security and confidence, as well as challenge traditional gender roles. In the words of the workshop owner, Lupita Esquivel: “Knowing how to repair a motorcycle is not just a technical skill; “It is an exercise that breaks stereotypes and provides tools that empower women in their daily lives.”
In this framework, Pamela Alvarado Álvarez, deputy director of Analysis, Awareness and Training Processes, highlighted that in Mexico 18 percent of motorcycle users are women, but less than 10 percent have basic mechanical knowledge, which limits their independence in case of emergencies, so these types of initiatives seek to close that gap and promote greater autonomy for them.
With these actions, the Government of Morelos reaffirms its commitment to building safe spaces and real opportunities for women to achieve their comprehensive development, promoting their economic independence and breaking cycles of violence.
