Duarte Basketball Awards: A Conversation with Local Legend Leonel Núñez
The 35th annual Duarte Province Basketball Awards ceremony was a night to remember, celebrating the amazing talent and dedication of our local athletes. To delve deeper into the stories behind the accolades, I had the pleasure of sitting down with leonel Núñez, the newly crowned Rookie of the Year and a former national team player now shining with the San Vicente club.
Me: Leonel, congratulations on an incredible season and well-deserved recognition as Rookie of the Year! Coming off the bench and making such a significant impact must feel amazing.
Leonel: Thank you so much! It’s truly an honor to be recognized, especially alongside so many talented players. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the team’s success, and I’m always ready to give my best when my name is called. Being a former national team player helps, of course, but this league is fiercely competitive.
Me: Absolutely, the caliber of play in the Duarte province is exceptional. Many were surprised to see you coming off the bench this season. Was that a strategic decision, or perhaps a way to ease back into the rhythm of competitive basketball after your time with the national team?
Leonel: It was a bit of both.Coach made a conscious decision to utilize our bench depth strategically. it’s about maximizing every player’s strengths and ensuring everyone is contributing effectively.
Personally, it was great to regain my rhythm without the pressure of being a starter right from the get-go. Coming off the bench allowed me to study the game, analyze the opponent, and make an impact when the time was right.
Me: Speaking of coaches, Danilo Javier Jerez of San Martín de Porres was named Manager of the Year after leading his team to a stellar 7-1 record. What are your thoughts on his coaching style and the impact he’s had on the league?
Leonel: Danilo is an excellent strategist. His teams are always well-prepared,and he gets the best out of his players. He fosters a strong team culture and instills a belief in his players’ abilities. His success this season doesn’t surprise me at all. he clearly deserves the recognition
Me: this year’s ceremony highlighted the remarkable talent flowing through the Duarte province. Juan Luis Cruz and Braheam Pérez, representing the Nordestano Loan Consortium, did a fantastic job presenting the awards. What are your hopes for the future of basketball in the Duarte province?
