Looking back over your illustrious career, what stands out as the most cherished memory?
That’s a difficult question! Every victory, every medal holds a special place in my heart. But perhaps the moment that truly resonates is standing on the podium in Tokyo [2022], claiming my third world championship title.Pushing my body and mind to the limit, proving myself against the very best in the world – that feeling of accomplishment was unparalleled.
Many athletes struggle with the idea of retirement. What motivated your decision to step away from the sport you’ve dedicated your life to?
It wasn’t an easy decision. Judo has been my passion, my identity for over two decades. But I knew deep down that it was time. My body has been through a lot, and I wanted to retire on my own terms, still performing at a high level. I’m ready to pursue new challenges and dedicate myself to other aspects of my life.
You’ve mentioned pushing your body to its limits. Could you elaborate on the dedication and sacrifices required to reach and maintain the pinnacle of judo?
Judo is as much a mental game as it is physical. You need unwavering discipline, unwavering focus. Training is relentless – hours upon hours of honing technique,building strength,pushing past fatigue. It requires unwavering commitment and often means sacrificing time with loved ones, social events, and sometimes even basic comforts.
But it’s clear you wouldn’t trade it for the world, right? Your success story is truly inspiring. How much do you think your unwavering determination contributed to your achievements?
Determination was crucial,absolutely. There were countless moments of doubt, moments where giving up seemed easier.But the burning desire to succeed, to represent my country with pride, pushed me forward.
You hold the unique distinction of being the only Brazilian judoka to conquer the most prestigious Grand Slam tournaments: Paris and Tokyo. What made these victories notably special?
Those Grand Slam tournaments are the pinnacle of judo competition.The best athletes from around the world converge, their skills honed to perfection. To stand atop that podium, knowing you’ve outperformed the elite, is an incredible feeling.
What message do you have for aspiring judokas looking to follow in your footsteps?
Never give up on your dreams.Believe in yourself, even when others doubt you. embrace the challenges, the setbacks, because thay make you stronger. And most importantly, remember the joy of the sport. Judo isn’t just about winning medals; it’s about pushing your limits, discovering your inner strength, and connecting with a global community of passionate individuals.
