(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Ahn Hong-seok = Transgender women have been banned from participating in domestic tennis competitions in England, the home country of tennis.

According to major foreign media such as the Associated Press on the 13th, the British Tennis Association (LTA) established a new rule prohibiting transgender people who have changed their gender to female from participating in national and inter-club competitions.

The LTA said, “It is clear that tennis and padel (indoor informal tennis) are sports that are influenced by gender. On average, men have an advantage when playing against women,” and added, “For transgender women, much of this male advantage is maintained, making it difficult for them to compete.” “There is broad agreement that there is a potential element of unfairness,” he said, explaining the reason for the new regulations.

The new regulations will take effect from January 25th of next year. Transgender women are not allowed to participate in all competitions managed by the LTA, from local competitions to national competitions.

However, this rule does not apply to major tournaments such as Wimbledon, Women’s Professional Tennis (WTA) tour tournaments, and International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments.

Currently, the WTA Tour allows transgender women to compete if they have reported their gender as female for at least four years, have testosterone levels below the standard and consent to testing procedures.

With the UK banning transgender women from participating in competitions, there is a greater possibility that international regulations such as the WTA will change.

“This policy will help establish fair national common standards for all competitions,” the LTA said.
