Dortmund’s Winter Transfer Pursuit: A Missed Possibility with Real Madrid’s Arda Güler
Borussia Dortmund’s search for reinforcements during the winter transfer window has hit a snag. The club’s interest in Real Madrid’s rising star, Arda Güler, has been rebuffed.
Reports from Bernabeu Digital, a source close to the Spanish club, indicate that Dortmund recently submitted a loan offer for the 19-year-old Turkish international. However, both Real Madrid and Güler himself have declined the proposal. This isn’t the first time Güler has been linked to Dortmund. The Bundesliga side actively pursued him during the summer of 2023 when he was still playing for Fenerbahçe Istanbul. At the time, Dortmund seemed to be in a strong position to secure his signature. Ultimately, Real Madrid swooped in, triggering his €20 million release clause.Despite being hailed as a generational talent, Güler has struggled to break into Real Madrid’s starting lineup. He has only started seven of the 24 competitive matches this season, with his contributions limited to one goal and three assists in La Liga.
While Güler’s limited playing time might suggest an opportunity for a loan move, the young midfielder appears steadfast to prove himself at Real Madrid. His contract with the reigning Champions League winners runs until 2029, making a temporary switch to Dortmund unlikely.
this setback for Dortmund highlights the challenges of attracting top talent during the winter transfer window. With the January transfer market notoriously challenging to navigate, Dortmund will need to explore option options to bolster their squad.

Güler’s Real Madrid Snub: A missed Possibility for Dortmund?
A Conversation with Former Bundesliga Star Stefan Reuter
Borussia Dortmund’s recent attempt to secure Arda Güler on loan from Real Madrid has ended in disappointment. The Turkish prodigy, who dazzled during his time at fenerbahçe, has instead chosen to stay and fight for his place at the Bernabéu, leaving Dortmund fans wondering what might have been.
To unpack this transfer saga, we sat down with former Dortmund defender and Bundesliga legend Stefan Reuter, to get his insights on the situation and what it means for both clubs.
Me: Stefan, Dortmund seemed desperately keen on Güler, both in the summer and now again in january. What do you make of their pursuit of such a young, relatively unproven talent?
stefan Reuter:
Güler’s precocious talent is undeniable. He’s a gifted player with immense potential, and I understand why Dortmund was so interested. They have a history of nurturing young stars and developing them into world-class players. Think of players like Ousmane Dembélé and Jadon Sancho. Though, I think there’s a difference between those players and Güler at this stage.
Dembélé and Sancho had already established themselves as consistent performers in the Bundesliga before moving on. Güler is still finding his feet at Real Madrid, struggling for consistent playing time.
Me: Absolutely. He has only started seven games this season, although you could argue that playing for Real Madrid, with its star-studded lineup, presents a steeper learning curve than the Bundesliga. Could this be an opportunity for Güler to gain valuable experience at a club like Dortmund, even if its just on loan?
Stefan Reuter:
I agree, the competition for places at Real Madrid is incredibly fierce. Perhaps a loan spell could have been beneficial for Güler’s advancement. However, the fact that he himself declined the move tells us something crucial.
it shows ambition and belief in himself. He wants to prove he belongs at Real Madrid, and I admire that. It might take time, but sometimes that mental fortitude is as crucial as raw talent.
Me:
True, and Real Madrid’s investment in him – triggering his €20 million release clause speaks volumes about their belief in Güler’s potential.
So, this setback leaves Dortmund back at square one midway through the season. They clearly need reinforcements, and the winter transfer window is notoriously difficult to navigate. What options do they have now?
Stefan Reuter:
It’s definitely a challenge. The winter window is a tricky beast.
Dortmund needs to be smart and realistic.
They could perhaps look for a more experienced player who’s willing to make a short-term move, someone who can slot in immediately and provide leadership. Or they could look for another promising, but perhaps less high-profile, young talent who will be hungry to perform.
Either way, it’s a situation where Dortmund’s scouting network and recruitment team will have to be working overtime.
Me:
It’s clear Dortmund still has a lot to do if they want to challenge seriously for silverware this season.
Thank you for giving us your perspective,Stefan.
Stefan Reuter: My pleasure.
What do YOU think?
Should Güler have taken the loan opportunity at Dortmund,or is he right to stay and fight for his place at Real Madrid?
