Catania airport Soars Past 12 Million Passengers in 2024
CataniaS Vincenzo Bellini Airport has achieved a remarkable feat, surpassing the 12 million passenger mark in 2024.This achievement, as highlighted by the airport’s managing company, SAC, underscores its vital role in connecting southeastern Sicily and its consistent upward trajectory.
The airport welcomed a total of 12,340,005 passengers in 2024, representing a considerable 14.9% increase compared to the 10,739,614 passengers recorded in 2023.This surge in passenger numbers is fueled by a combination of robust domestic traffic and the expansion of international routes.
Notable among these routes is the connection to Rome Fiumicino, which saw a remarkable 25% increase, transporting 1,950,000 passengers throughout the year. Another standout performer is the Tirana route, which experienced an unusual 220% growth, reaching an impressive 245,000 travelers.
Looking ahead, SAC CEO Nico Torrisi expressed optimism, stating, “We are confident about the future. Our goal for 2025 is to build on this progress by further expanding our network of connections and enhancing the passenger experience. Simultaneously,we are committed to revitalizing Comiso airport through strategic investments and collaborative planning with local communities.”
While Comiso airport, also under SAC’s management, witnessed a decline in traffic in 2024, with 260,642 passengers (-14%) and a 6.8% decrease in movements compared to 2023, there are encouraging signs of recovery. The Christmas period saw a promising uptick, with an estimated 12% increase in passengers and an 18% rise in movements.SAC attributes this positive trend to significant regional and national government funding, which has enabled the implementation of an investment plan aimed at revitalizing comiso airport. The plan focuses on strengthening the airport’s offerings and boosting the attractiveness of the region.
