Arjonilla Badminton Faces Another Setback in Top 10 iberdrola
The CB Arjonilla badminton team suffered their third consecutive loss in the Top 10 Iberdrola league, falling 2-5 to the Bádminton Pitius of Ibiza on December 21st. Despite the home advantage at the Municipal juan Antonio Cuesta, the arjonilla squad remains winless after four rounds.The match began with a disappointing result in the mixed doubles. Anne Fulgsang and Fabio Caponio were defeated by alex Green and Carmen Jiménez in a closely contested match that ended 2-11, 11-6, 10-11, 10-11.
The women’s and men’s doubles matches also went in favor of the Pitius. sonia Martínez and Carmen Lara lost to Clara Azurmendi and Carmen Jiménez (3-11, 8-11, 9-11), while Alex Green and Jonty Russ triumphed over Joan Monroy and Ernesto Baschwitz (4-11, 7-11, 6-11).
With the score at 0-3, the Arjonilla team needed a strong showing in the individual matches.Anne Fulgsang delivered the first point for the home side, defeating Macarena Izquierdo in the women’s singles 2 (11-10, 11-5, 11-10). Though, Ernesto Baschwitz fell to Jonty Russ in a grueling five-set match (9-11, 9-11, 11-2, 11-10, 5-11) in the men’s singles 2.
The final two individual matches resulted in a split. Fabio Caponio secured a victory for Arjonilla in the men’s singles 1, defeating Marc Martín (11-5, 11-4, 11-), while Clara Azurmendi clinched the women’s singles for Pitius, overcoming Sonia Martínez (2-11, 9-11, 7-11).
“We had hoped for a closer result, perhaps 4-3 or 3-4, but a 2-5 loss was unexpected,” stated Pons, the Arjonilla coach.”Things aren’t going as planned, and we need to start earning points if we want to avoid relegation.”
The Arjonilla team currently sits at the bottom of group B, tied on points with Alicante, their next opponent. The two teams will face off on january 11th in Alicante, marking the end of the first round of the Top 10 Iberdrola.
