TEZU, Dec 03: The 11th edition of Chief Minister’s Sub-Veteran & Veteran State Badminton Championship-2024, hosted by Lohit District Badminton Association (LDBA) and supported by Arunachal State Badminton Association (ASBA), that drew over 300 shuttlers from across the state was kicked off here on Tuesday.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Women and Child Development Minister Dasanglu Pul stressed the importance of promoting sports to maintain health, foster discipline and inspired younger generation to pursue athletic excellence.
She expressed her happiness in growing interest in badminton and encouraged players to give their best on the court.
Local MLA Mohesh Chai highlighted significance of the championship in fostering local talent and building a sporting culture in the region. Giving brief history on Tezu hosting state level tournaments, he urged all players to not only focus on competition but also on friendship that sports can create.
MLA Laisam Simai spoke about potential of sports in Arunachal, praising the event for showcasing the sporting talent of both seasoned veterans and young aspirants. He stressed the importance of such events in bringing together people from different walks of life and promoting social harmony.
ASBA secretary general Bamang Tago said that the seniors are setting an example for younger generation to follow through their participation in the championship. He also announced that Olympic Association of Arunachal would sponsor players who excel to represent the state as opportunity to compete at national level.
LDBA president Ojimso Tayang, and secretary Bablalum Chiba, in their addresses, lauded the players and officials, particularly sponsors for their support. They hoped that it would continue to inspire future generations of badminton players.
The championship would feature various competitive categories, including the 35+, 40+, 45+, and 50+ divisions for both men and women. A mixed doubles category in the 35+ division adds an exciting twist to the competition.
The tournament will be controlled and supervised by national umpire Tania Yasap with Pema Laden as referee and deputy referee respectively.
