From Court to Comic: The Artistic Fusion of Tennis and Storytelling
Marc-Antoine Mathieu, a renowned designer and comic book artist, found inspiration for his latest project in an unexpected place: a tennis court viewed from above. This unique perspective sparked a creative journey, merging the structured layout of the court with the boundless world of comics.
Mathieu, a graduate of the Fine Arts of Angers with over twenty published albums to his name, envisioned the court as a series of interconnected panels, reminiscent of a comic book page. He saw the service squares and corridors as dynamic elements, shaping the narrative flow.”The court, seen from above, resembled a comic book box,” he explained, ”with corridors and service squares acting as pathways for the story.”
This innovative concept led mathieu to create a ten-panel comic strip, each panel reflecting a different aspect of the tennis court. He meticulously sketched his ideas, transforming them into a detailed drawing before digitizing and refining the artwork.
A key challenge lay in capturing the distinctive hue of the clay court.Mathieu, known for his meticulous attention to detail, collaborated closely with the French Tennis Federation (FFT) to ensure the color was accurately represented. ”It’s more than just a shade,” he emphasized, highlighting the complexity of reproducing this unique pigment in a visual medium.
This collaborative process, combining Mathieu’s artistic vision with the FFT’s expertise, resulted in a stunning visual representation of the iconic Roland-Garros tournament. The project exemplifies the power of artistic innovation, transforming a familiar sporting arena into a captivating comic book narrative.

Gabriela: Thank you so much for having me!
Moderator: gabriela, we’ve been captivated by a recent project where renowned artist Marc-Antoine Mathieu used the Roland-Garros court as inspiration for a comic strip. When we saw the court laid out like a comic book panel, it truly sparked our imagination. What are your thoughts on this unique interpretation of a familiar sporting arena?
Gabriela: It’s amazing, really. As players, we spend so much time on the court, analyzing every inch, every angle. To see it transformed into a storytelling canvas is quiet a revelation. It highlights the visual beauty and drama already inherent in the sport.
Moderator: Absolutely! Mathieu even mentioned the challenge of accurately capturing the distinctive hue of the clay court. What makes that shade of red so iconic, in your opinion, Gabriela?
Gabriela: Oh, there’s a certain magic to Roland-Garros clay. It’s not just a color; it’s a feeling. It’s the history, the anticipation, the battles fought on that surface. To see Mathieu collaborating with the FFT to get that exact tone right speaks volumes about his dedication to authenticity.
