Teddy Riner: “It was an honor to be invited to Senegal.I’ve always admired the nation’s passion for judo, and seeing it firsthand was incredibly inspiring. The enthusiasm of the young athletes, the commitment of the Senegalese Judo Federation, and the warm welcome from the COJOG team made this trip truly special. We had productive discussions about the future of judo in Senegal, and I’m excited about the possibilities.”
You’ve been vocal about using your platform to empower young athletes. How do you see the Youth Olympic games impacting Senegal and the wider African continent?
TR: “The Youth Olympic Games are a phenomenal possibility for young African athletes. They provide a platform to showcase their talent on a global stage, gain invaluable experience, and inspire a generation. It’s about more than just medals; it’s about fostering a spirit of sportsmanship, understanding, and global citizenship.”
One of the key takeaways from your visit was the brainstorming session with the Senegalese Judo Federation. Can you shed some light on the exciting prospects discussed?
TR: “We explored various initiatives, including athlete growth programs, coaching workshops, and community outreach programs.The goal is to create a sustainable ecosystem for judo in Senegal, nurturing talent from a grassroots level and providing pathways for athletes to reach their full potential.”
Your humility and genuine passion for the sport are truly admirable. How crucial do you believe mentorship and inspiration are for young athletes, especially those from developing countries?
TR: “Mentorship and inspiration are absolutely vital. Young athletes need role models they can relate to, who understand their struggles and can guide them on their journey. I believe sharing my experiences, both the triumphs and the challenges, can empower them to believe in their dreams and work hard to achieve them. It’s a privilege to be in a position to inspire.”
