Bayer wins after red against Neuer – Bielefeld surprises
Leverkusen wins the heated cup top game and remains in the race to defend their title. Third division team Bielefeld and the runners-up are also in the quarter-finals. Bremen has to tremble for a long time.
Bayer Leverkusen is in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup after winning the top duel at Bayern Munich. The defending champion prevailed 1-0 (0-0). Nathan Tella decided the hard-fought game with a header in the 69th minute. Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had previously seen the first red card of his career after an emergency stop (17th).
Arminia Bielefeld had previously provided the surprise of the evening. The third division team from East Westphalia won 3-1 (2-0) against SC Freiburg and already eliminated the third higher-class club. Runners-up VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen are also in the last eight. The Hanseatic League won 1-0 (0-0) against second division team Darmstadt 98 with a goal in stoppage time, VfB won 3-0 (2-0) at second division bottom team Jahn Regensburg.
Bayern initially have better chances
In Munich, the already heated game got even more spiced up after Neuer was sent off and was initially characterized by nicks and fouls. Despite being outnumbered, Bayern had the better opportunities before the break. However, Kingsley Coman (34th, 38th), Leon Goretzka (43rd) and Minjae Kim (45th +3) missed the chance to convert their superiority into something countable. For the guests, Florian Wirtz was unable to get the ball on goal after a great solo (45th).
Even after the break, Bayern were initially the more active team, but after 70 minutes their strength dwindled. Leverkusen took advantage of this. Tella evaded the FCB defense and headed in Alejandro Grimaldo’s pinpoint cross for the win.
Bremen scores in stoppage time
In Bielefeld, Christopher Lannert (28th), Julian Kania (36th/hand penalty) and Louis Oppie (81st) let the outsiders celebrate on the Alm, while Michael Gregoritsch (63rd) was only able to catch up with Freiburg at times.
In Bremen, despite the class difference, everything pointed to an extension. The Bundesliga team was vastly superior, but they still couldn’t score a goal. Coach Florian Kohfeldt had put the Lilies from Darmstadt in an excellent defensive position against his former club. Only Anthony Jung (90th +4) managed to score the deserved winning goal after Marvin Ducksch’s preparatory work.
Stuttgart advanced confidently in Regensburg. The goals were scored by Enzo Millot (10th), Anrie Chase (19th) and Nick Woltemade (61st).
