In the round of 16 of the DFB Cup, defending champion Bayer Leverkusen eliminated their strongest rivals. There was a bigger surprise in Bielefeld.
After goalkeeper Manuel Neuer’s bitter red debut, defending champions Bayer Leverkusen shot FC Bayern out of the DFB Cup. The Munich team, who dominated a poisonous round of 16 battle when they were outnumbered for a long time, suffered the most serious defeat in coach Vincent Kompany’s young term in office with a 0-1 (0-0). For the fifth time in a row, the record winner failed prematurely in the cup competition.
Leverkusen’s joker Nathan Tella silenced most of the 75,000 spectators with his header goal a few minutes after he came on (69th minute). In his third professional game for Bayern, Israeli national goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, who came on as a substitute for Neuer, had no chance of defending against the unchallenged header of the Bayer professional, who is only 1.73 meters tall.
Neuer sees red in the DFB Cup
Neuer’s first dismissal in his 867th game in professional football was the early starting signal in the 17th minute for a heated and exciting meeting of giants between the record winners from Munich and the double winners from the Rhine.
After a long ball from national defender Jonathan Tah, the 38-year-old Neuer stopped the onrushing Jeremie Frimpong with a body check outside the penalty area. Referee Harm Osmers showed red.
SV Werder Bremen – SV Darmstadt 98
When former coach Florian Kohfeldt returned, Werder Bremen made it through to the quarter-finals with a lot of effort and thanks to a late, last-minute goal from Anthony Jung. The Bundesliga team won 1-0 (0-0) against lower-class SV Darmstadt 98 at home in the Weserstadion. Jung made the decision after a free kick from Marvin Ducksch in the fourth minute of stoppage time in front of 40,000 spectators.
Arminia Bielefeld – SC Freiburg
SC Freiburg embarrassed themselves and was eliminated in the round of 16 at Arminia Bielefeld. The Bundesliga team deservedly lost 1:3 (0:2) to the third division team. In front of 26,311 spectators at the sold-out Bielefelder Alm, Christopher Lannert in the 28th minute, Julian Kania (36th/hand penalty) and Louis Oppie (81st) scored the euphorically applauded goals for the hosts, who are increasingly becoming a cup scare.
Arminia, who had already knocked a first division team, 1. FC Union Berlin, out of the competition in the second round, can look forward to another football festival evening. The Freiburgers, who were changed to five positions by coach Julian Schuster, experienced bitter disappointment three days after their league win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Michael Gregoritsch’s goal (63′) was not enough.
DFB Cup: SSV Jahn Regensburg – VfB Stuttgart
Even after a radical rotation, VfB Stuttgart reached the quarter-finals and can continue to dream of the trip to Berlin. Without Alexander Nübel, Maximilian Mittelstädt or Ermedin Demirovic in his starting line-up, the Swabian Champions League starter confidently won 3-0 (2-0) against the second division bottom team SSV Jahn Regensburg with no chance.
Three days before the Bundesliga home game against 1. FC Union Berlin, a Stuttgart starting eleven that had been changed to seven positions was at least one class too strong for the Upper Palatinate team, who can now concentrate exclusively on their complicated project of staying in the league.
Enzo Millot (10th minute) and Anrie Chase (19th) quickly robbed the harmless Jahn of any hope of a sensation in front of 15,210 spectators. Nick Woltemade (61′) rounded off VfB’s successful business trip, who was even unlucky when substitute Demirovic (74′) hit the post.
