There is certainly no lack of “buzz” in the run-up to the ATP Tour 250 tournament. It doesn’t start until December 30th. But Nick Kyrgios is reportedly already there and is preparing for his comeback. And because there is just time, Kyrgios will not only serve in singles, but also in doubles: alongside Novak Djokovic. Kyrgios has reportedly arranged to meet his friend Thanasi Kokkinakis for the Australian Open.
Novak Djokovic in doubles – that doesn’t happen often. In 2024, only once, namely in the Davis Cup against Greece, where “Nole” won alongside Hamad Medjedovic in front of a home crowd in Belgrade. In the 2023 season, Djokovic took part in three ATP doubles tournaments: right at the beginning of the year together with Vasek Pospisil in Adelaide, later with Nikola Cacic in Cincinnati and with Miomir Kecmanovic in Paris-Bercy. There were also two appearances in the Davis Cup.
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis win at the Australian Open
It was not foreseeable a few years ago that Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic would get along so well. The Australian hardly gave Djokovic a good look in a podcast with the American journalist Ben Rothenberg. After that, a period of rapprochement apparently began. The two came very close in the final of Wimbledon 2022, the first final for Kyrgios in a major. Djokovic won this in four sets.
Nick Kyrgios’ last double appearance was even further back. This happened as part of the ATP Finals 2022 in Turin. Kyrgios and Kokkinakis qualified for this for the first time. The decisive factor for this was the surprising triumph at the Australian Open that year.
