TEZU, Dec 3: The 11th edition of the Chief Minister’s Sub-Veteran & Veteran State Badminton Championship 2024 officially kicked off here in Lohit district, on Tuesday.
The event, hosted by the Lohit District Badminton Association (LDBA) and supported by the Arunachal State Badminton Association (ASBA), has drawn over 300 shuttlers from across the state.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Women and Child Development minister, Dasanglu Pul, emphasized the importance of promoting sports as a way to maintain health, foster discipline, and inspire the younger generation to pursue athletic excellence.
She expressed her happiness in the growing interest in badminton and encouraged players to give their best on the court.
Local MLA, Mohesh Chai, highlighted the significance of the championship in fostering local talent and building a sporting culture in the region.
Providing a brief history on  Tezu hosting state level tournaments, he urged the participants to not only focus on the competition but also on the bonds of friendship that sports can create.
MLA Laisam Simai spoke about the potential of sports in Arunachal, praising the event for showcasing the sporting talent of both seasoned veterans and young aspirants.
He stressed the importance of such events in bringing together people from different walks of life and promoting social harmony.
ASBA secretary general Bamang Tago said that the seniors are setting an example for the younger generation to follow through their participation in the championship.
He further announced  that the Olympic Association of Arunachal will sponsor the players who excel and represent the state at the National Games, providing them with opportunities to compete at the national level.
LDBA president, Ojimso Tayang, and secretary, Bablalum Chiba, also addressed the crowd, thanking the players, officials, and sponsors for their support in making the event a reality.
They expressed hope that it would continue to inspire future generations of badminton players.
The championship will feature a variety of competitive categories, including the 35+, 40+, 45+, and 50+ divisions for both men and women. A mixed doubles category in the 35+ division adds an exciting twist to the competition.
The tournament will be controlled and supervised by national umpire Tania Yasap with Pema Laden serving as the referee and deputy referee, respectively.
