Behind the Scenes: Nagelsmann Reflects on Euro 2024 Heartbreak and DFB Team Dynamics
A new RTL documentary, “Our Team – The Home European Championship 2024,” offers an intimate look at the German national team’s journey during the tournament, including Julian Nagelsmann’s surprising composure after a controversial handball incident.
the documentary, premiering on January 9th in Munich and select cinemas across European Championship venues, captures Nagelsmann’s measured response to the missed penalty call against Spain in the quarter-finals. “Looking back,I’m surprised by my reaction,” he admits.”There were routine throw-ins where I was far more animated.”
Despite the disappointment, Nagelsmann emphasizes the importance of maintaining focus. “You have to try and stick to the game plan,” he explains. “We still had a chance to win, even without the penalty.”
The documentary briefly touches on the handball incident, with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer expressing his frustration. “It was clear to me that it would be reviewed,” he says. “It was ultimately fatal that it wasn’t.”
Ilkay Gündogan, then DFB captain, echoes Neuer’s sentiment, stating, “In most cases, the decision would have gone the other way. It felt like a bitter blow against us.”
Beyond the on-field drama, the documentary offers glimpses into the team’s dynamics. Viewers witness DFB chef Anton Schmaus rallying the players before the spain match with a motivational cry: “Today, we’re shaving the Spaniards – dry!”
Adding a touch of levity, the film introduces “camp mascot” Ringo, a canary sporting a mullet hairstyle. Defender David Raum is seen caring for Ringo, who, according to the documentary, has a fondness for cucumbers, lettuce, and apples.
“Our Team – The home European Championship 2024” promises an engaging and insightful look at the German national team’s experience, both on and off the pitch.
“Was That a Penalty? A Deeper Look into Germany’s Euro 2024 Journey” – An Interview with Former German Captain Lothar Matthäus
The dust has settled on Germany’s disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, and fans are still left debating the controversial moments. A new RTL documentary, “our Team – the Home European Championship 2024,” offers a behind-the-scenes peek into the team’s journey, including Julian Nagelsmann’s surprisingly composed reaction to the missed handball penalty call against Spain in the quarterfinals.
To dissect the emotions, the decisions, and the overall experience, we’ve invited German football legend and former captain, Lothar Matthäus, to join us. Lothar, welcome to the show.
LM: Thanks for having me. It’s always a pleasure to talk about German football.

Let’s dive straight into it. having captained your country, you understand the weight of those moments on the pitch. How do you feel about Nagelsmann’s response to the handball incident? Was staying calm the right call, or shoudl he have been more demonstrative?
LM: Look, I’ve been in those situations. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions. On the one hand, you’re desperate for that call to go your way – it can be a game-changer. On the other hand, showing your frustration won’t do anything to change the referee’s decision. You have to stay focused, trust your players to perform, and adjust your tactics if necessary.I commend Nagelsmann for maintaining his composure. It shows leadership.

Interesting point. The documentary also highlights the impact the missed penalty had on the players, with teammates like Manuel Neuer and Ilkay Gündogan expressing their disappointment. Do you think that affected their performance?
LM: It’s unachievable to say for sure. Football is a tough game, and setbacks like that can be demoralizing. But these are professionals, they know how to handle pressure. They have to shake it off and keep pushing.
Moderator:
Absolutely. Beyond the on-field drama, the documentary showcases the team’s camaraderie and lighthearted moments. We see glimpses of Anton Schmaus, the chef, motivating the players with his keen pep talks, and even a camp mascot,Ringo the canary! Did those moments surprise you?
LM: Not really. Every team needs a bit of fun and levity to balance the intensity of the competition. I remember when we were preparing for Italia ’90; we had our own ”lucky charm” – a stuffed camel named Jamal. These things can bind a team together.
Moderator:
Exactly. It shows they’re not just colleagues but a team bound by a shared experience. Now, looking ahead, what lessons can Germany take from Euro 2024 for the next upcoming international tournaments?
LM: They need to build consistency. They showed flashes of brilliance but lacked the ruthlessness needed at the highest level. They need to find their identity, their style of play, and stick to it.
