What has been brewing for a long time is now official: Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting is moving to the RB cosmos.
The ex-Bayern star has signed a two-year contract with the New York Red Bulls in the US MLS with an option for a further season. His transfer was officially confirmed on Wednesday.
The 35-year-old has thus found a club again six months after his contract with FC Bayern Munich ended, for whom he scored 38 goals and contributed 13 assists in 122 games. In the meantime, the Cameroonian was also traded by HSV and Schalke 04.
“We are pleased to add a player of the caliber of Maxim to our squad,” RB sports director Jochen Schneider was quoted as saying by the club.
Meets old acquaintances
In New York, the striker meets two old acquaintances – his ex-coach Sandro Schwarz, whom he knows from their time together at Mainz 05 – and ex-Bundesliga kicker Emil Forsberg. The latter captained the club to the MLS final last season, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to Marco Reus and Los Angeles Galaxy.
In his career, Choupo-Moting played for FC Bayern and Mainz as well as for Paris Saint-Germain, Stoke City, Schalke 04, HSV and 1. FC Nürnberg. The 35-year-old, who played 73 international matches for Cameroon, is a three-time German champion, two-time French champion and Club World Champion.
