FC Bayern surprisingly lost to Mainz. The victorious Leverkusen team benefited from this. Bochum’s game at Union was overshadowed by a throwing scandal.
FC Bayern suffered their first defeat of the season in the Bundesliga. The Munich team lost 1:2 (0:1) at FSV Mainz 05, the lead over their pursuers Bayer Leverkusen is now only four points. The champions won 2-0 (2-0) at FC Augsburg. Eintracht Frankfurt can overtake Leverkusen with a win on Sunday at RB Leipzig.
When bottom team VfL Bochum drew 1-1 (1-1) at 1. FC Union Berlin, there was a scandal and a lengthy interruption shortly before the end. Bochum goalkeeper Patrick Drewes was hit by an object (probably a lighter) from the Union block. Drewes had to be brought off the field with support. The game was interrupted by referee Martin Petersen and both teams left the pitch.
Bremen wins the evening game
When the game resumed, Drewes did not return to the field. Since Bochum were no longer allowed to make substitutions, striker Philipp Hofmann went into goal. Both teams showed no further action after the restart and passed the ball back and forth until the final whistle.
The penultimate Holstein Kiel suffered a setback with a 1:4 (1:3) at Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the evening, Werder Bremen secured an easy away win against newly promoted FC St. Pauli. Derrick Köhn (24th minute) and Marvin Ducksch (54th) scored for coach Ole Werner’s team, which improved to seventh place with the win. St. Pauli can slip to 16th place on Sunday.
Mainz surprises FC Bayern
Bayern had a lot of trouble finding their way into the game. In the first half hour, Munich only had two shots on goal. Mainz held strong against it and deservedly took the lead through Jae-sung Lee (41st minute). After an hour, the South Korean was successful again. It became even more difficult for the record champions, Leroy Sané’s (87th) goal came too late.
Leverkusen took the lead through Martin Terrier (16th), Florian Wirtz (40th) scored Bayer’s second goal. As a result, Leverkusen managed their lead cleverly. In the game next Saturday against SC Freiburg, Bayer can ideally get even closer to FC Bayern at the end of the year.
Tough games for the relegation candidates
Tim Kleindienst gave Gladbach the lead against Kiel with a header after just over 30 seconds. Robin Hack (26th) followed up before Kiel’s Armin Gigovic (30th) scored the next goal. Alassane Plea first restored the two-goal gap with his goal in the 43rd minute, before he was successful again shortly before the start of the final phase (79th).
Bottom team Bochum weakened itself in the early stages. Koji Miyoshi was shown a red card in the 13th minute after a clear foul on Andras Schäfer. Nevertheless, Bochum initially took the lead: Ibrahima Sissoko (23′) scored with a header. Benedict Hollerbach (33rd) brought Union back into the game early.
