Footballer Guus Til has responded to his own statements yesterday, when he told the ESPN camera that he has not been feeling well lately. Today he reassures fans: Til does not deny that he is in a slump, but also says that there is ‘nothing to worry about’. “I’ve had this before and I’ve always come out of it.”

The PSV midfielder played a great match yesterday and scored two nice goals, but afterwards indicated that he could not enjoy it. “I want to radiate happiness because that’s who I am, but right now I don’t have that,” he said. “Lately I haven’t had any fire or anything. I can’t even be happy after a goal anymore. I’m so neutral on the field and I don’t know why. I can’t place it. I’m a bit lost. at this moment.”

‘Is this it?’

Football analysts discussed the conversation extensively on television, with speculation about a burnout. Til now calls such speculations ‘bad’ in the new interview on the PSV club website. “There is nothing wrong,” he said, among other things. “That I would have a burnout, that is not the case.”

Til did repeat that he is not feeling well: “I have been feeling less comfortable lately, in my head. I am a bit paralyzed in my emotions. If I win or lose, I don’t feel anything about it. you sit at home and think: is this it?”

According to him, that feeling is not reserved for top athletes: “I think people in the workplace also recognize it. Sometimes you go through a period when you don’t feel anything about it.”

Football is the solution

Taking a break from football, as the analysts suggested, is not the solution to the problem, according to Til himself. “The last thing I want is to stop playing football. Football is the solution to it. I’ve had this before. I didn’t say anything about it then. I came out of it then too. The solution is football and being here with the guys.”

Til also indicated that he received help from a professional in the mental field. “It’s good for any top athlete, I think, to deal with your emotions because there is pressure. But you don’t have to worry.”
