Eddie Jordan was Michael Schumacher’s first team boss in Formula 1. The Irishman helped the racing legend to his first race in the premier class. 33 years later, Jordan makes his cancer public – not without ulterior motives.
Eddie Jordan was once Michael Schumacher’s great supporter. Jordan was Schumacher’s first team boss in Formula 1 in the early 1990s and enabled him to make his debut in the premier class at the Spa circuit in 1991. Schumacher drove his first and only race for Eddie Jordan’s Formula 1 racing team of the same name, then switched to Benetton. The two have been friends ever since.
Jordan, now 76, went public with bad news: he is suffering from cancer. The former Formula 1 team boss announced this in the episode of his podcast “Formula For Success” published on Thursday.
“I was diagnosed with prostate and bladder cancer in March and April. And then the cancer spread to the spine and pelvis, so it was pretty aggressive,” Jordan tells his podcast partner and ex-Formula 1 driver David Coulthard.
However, Jordan indicates that he is now on the mend. “We carry on. But yes, there were some very dark days. But we made it out of there,” Jordan says in the podcast.
Jordan appeals: “Take precautions”
The Irishman goes on to say that one person in particular inspired him to go public with the shocking diagnosis: track cycling legend Chris Hoy. The six-time Olympic champion made his cancer diagnosis public last October – the 48-year-old has terminal prostate cancer. According to his doctors, Hoy only has a few years left to live.
“It’s similar to me, but he’s a much younger man,” Jordan said. That’s why he appeals to listeners to take precautions. “I hope everyone is listening carefully – don’t put something like this off, but get yourself tested. There is so much help out there to extend your life. Don’t be stupid! Don’t be shy! “A test like this has nothing to do with shame, it’s about being good to your body,” Jordan said.
