Coupe de France Heats Up: Round of 16 Draw Looms
The Coupe de France is already delivering thrilling upsets as the 32nd finals draw to a close. While some Ligue 1 giants narrowly escaped elimination, others weren’t so lucky, setting the stage for a captivating round of 16.
This past Saturday witnessed several shocking results. Le Havre, currently sitting at 17th in Ligue 1,suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of National 2 side Saint-Brieuc,falling 0-1. Montpellier, another Ligue 1 representative, endured an even more humiliating fate, being routed 4-0 by amateur club du Puy, also from National 2.
Despite the upsets, other Ligue 1 teams managed to advance, albeit with some difficulty. Nice and Toulouse secured their spots in the next round through penalty shootouts against Corte (N3) and Hauts Lyonnais (N3), respectively. Lyon also progressed, but not without a scare, edging past Feignies-Aulnoye (N2) with a tight 2-1 victory.
The excitement builds as the final match of the 32nd finals, a highly anticipated clash between Lens and PSG, is set to kick off at 9 p.m. Adding to the drama, the draw for the Round of 16 will take place just one hour prior, meaning the winner of this titanic battle will promptly learn the identity of their next opponent.
Mark your calendars: the draw for the Coupe de France Round of 16 will be held this Sunday, December 22nd at 8 p.m., broadcast live on BeIN Sport 1.
Coupe de France Shocks continue: A Conversation with Former international Striker, Thierry Henry
The coupe de France is in full swing, delivering a rollercoaster of emotions with stunning upsets adn nail-biting finishes. Today, we’re joined by former Arsenal and france international striker, Thierry Henry, to dissect the latest developments and offer his expert viewpoint.
Thierry,welcome to the show!
Thierry Henry: Thanks for having me. It’s always a pleasure to talk football, especially when the Coupe de France throws up such exciting results.
Absolutely! Before we dive into the specifics, what are yoru general impressions of this year’s Coupe de France so far?
Thierry Henry: I think this year’s competition is proving that anything is possible. We’ve seen lower league teams pulling off fantastic results against the big guns. It’s a reminder that in cup competitions, form goes out the window and you have to be prepared for anything.
Indeed, we saw some shocking results over the weekend. What were your thoughts on Le Havre losing to Saint-Brieuc and Montpellier’s heavy defeat to du Puy?
Thierry Henry: Those results are testaments to the fairytale nature of the Coupe de France.Saint-Brieuc deserved thier win against Le Havre. They were organised, hungry, and took their chances. As for Montpellier, a 4-0 loss is a humiliation,no matter the opponent. They simply didn’t show up on the day.
It’s clear that some Ligue 1 teams are taking these lower-division sides lightly, which is a recipe for disaster.
thierry Henry: You can’t afford to underestimate anyone in this competition. The underdogs have nothing to lose and are playing with a freedom that can unsettle even the most experienced teams. You have to give them the respect they deserve.
Looking ahead, we have a tantalising clash drawn for the final game of the round – PSG vs Lens.
How do you see that one playing out?
thierry Henry: That’s a heavyweight bout and a real test for both teams. PSG, on paper, are the favourites. But Lens have been playing fantastic football this season. It’s a match that could go either way, and the Coupe de France draw, happening right after the final whistle, makes it even more intriguing. Imagine winning against PSG and then immediately knowing who your next opponent is – talk about pressure!
Exactly! Now, our readers are always eager for your predictions. Who do you see as favourites from here on out?
Thierry Henry: It;s still early days. Look, this competition is about handling the pressure, capitalizing on opportunities, and a bit of luck along the way. While PSG on paper are strong contenders, teams like Lyon, Nice, and hopefully, Lens, if they win, can cause serious problems.
Great insights,Thierry. Thank you for joining us and sharing your thoughts on this electrifying Coupe de France competition!
