Meet Yacine Boudjema-Diallo: A Budding Chemist from Bugey
At just 27 years old, Yacine Boudjema-diallo is making waves in the world of chemistry. This Lagnolan native’s journey, from his early days exploring the world through a microscope to earning his doctorate, is a testament to his dedication and passion for science.
Yacine’s academic excellence is evident from his extraordinary track record. After excelling at Charmettes primary school and Paul-Claudel collage, he graduated wiht honors from Plaine de l’Ain high school, achieving a perfect score in history and geography.He then pursued higher education in Lyon, obtaining both a DUT and an engineering diploma. His thirst for knowledge led him to Houston, texas, where he gained valuable experience working in a chemical company. On December 5th, he reached a notable milestone, successfully defending his thesis and earning his doctorate in chemistry. his research focused on the intricate mechanisms of sugar transformation, specifically examining the influence of zeolite catalysts and substrate nature.
Yacine’s mother, Vanessa, a coordinating nurse at the SIAD of Fontelune in Ambérieu, recalls his early interest with science. “even as a child, he was captivated by microscopes,” she shares. “He would eagerly order one for Christmas and spend hours examining anything he could find under the lens.” Vanessa beams with pride as she reflects on her son’s growth and accomplishments. She describes him as a brilliant mind who is also incredibly sociable and humble. “he never boasts about his achievements,” she says. “He effortlessly connects with people from all walks of life and maintains a positive attitude no matter the circumstances.” Vanessa has been a constant source of support, encouraging and reassuring Yacine throughout his journey.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Yacine is a well-rounded individual with a passion for travel and music. He has explored diverse destinations,including London,barcelona,Italy,Portugal,the USA,Germany,the Netherlands,Slovenia,Malta,and Tunisia. Japan remains a dream destination on his travel bucket list. While currently residing in Lyon, Yacine cherishes his roots and frequently returns to Bugey to spend quality time with his family, especially his two younger brothers and little sister. His scientific contributions have already garnered recognition, with his research being published in prestigious American journals.

It reminds me of the countless hours I spent honing my swimming skills before the world even knew my name.
Michael: You know, it’s inspiring to see that drive in anyone, nonetheless of their field. Yacine’s achievements at such a young age are remarkable. That dedication to science, exploring the world through a microscope as a kid, it’s a testament to natural curiosity but also to the power of consistent effort.
Host: Absolutely. He seems to have that combination of brilliance and humility,something I found crucial in my own sporting career. Staying grounded amidst the pressure and accolades is essential.
Michael: Couldn’t agree more.
Staying grounded while achieving immense success is crucial, but it’s not always easy. Did you ever feel the pressure of expectations weighing down on you, Michael?
Michael:
Of course. The pressure to perform,to live up to my own standards and those of others,was immense. But I learned to channel that pressure into motivation, to use it as fuel for my training.
Yacine seems to be a well-rounded individual. His travels, his love for music – how notable is it to foster interests outside your primary pursuit, be it sports or academics?
Michael: Vital. It’s easy to get consumed by your goals, especially when you’re driven like Yacine clearly is. but those outside interests are like oxygen for your mind.
They allow you to take a step back, recharge, and approach your main passion with renewed energy and viewpoint.
Host: I think Yacine’s mother, Vanessa, aptly describes his personality – brilliant yet humble. She mentions his positive attitude no matter the circumstances. How crucial is mental fortitude in facing challenges, both in the scientific world and in sports?
Michael: Mental fortitude is everything.It’s about resilience, believing in yourself even when things get tough. It’s about staying focused on your goals, even when faced with setbacks.
I saw firsthand how crucial mental strength was in my Olympic journey. Swimming against the best in the world, the pressure was immense.But it was my mental game, my ability to stay positive and focused, that ultimately made the difference.
So, Michael, what advice woudl you give to young people like Yacine, just starting their journeys in pursuit of excellence?
Michael: Never lose that spark, that initial curiosity that fuels your passion. Stay dedicated, work hard, and never be afraid to push your boundaries. And most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy the journey.
