Giulia Gwinn: Prioritizing the Pitch Over playboy
German football star Giulia Gwinn made headlines last year when she declined a high-profile offer from Playboy magazine. While the chance was undoubtedly tempting, Gwinn, then recovering from a serious knee injury, chose to focus on her athletic career.
“I respect Playboy as a publication, but I prefer to showcase my talents on the field,” Gwinn stated gracefully. At the time, she was sidelined and missed the World Championships in Australia and new Zealand, a disappointment for both her and German fans.
Despite the absence of sporting excitement from the German team, who failed to advance past the group stage, Gwinn’s dedication to her recovery paid off. This year, she celebrated a bronze medal victory with the German national team at the Olympics in Paris, even scoring a penalty kick after being fouled. This remarkable achievement solidified her position as Germany’s Player of the Year.
Gwinn’s decision to decline Playboy’s offer wasn’t unprecedented. In 2011, five members of the German U20 women’s team appeared on the magazine’s cover, sparking controversy within the football community. Some argued that posing in lingerie could negatively impact their careers, citing instances like Julia Simic’s alleged failed transfer to an English club due to past photoshoots.
Even former national team coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, who herself had declined a Playboy offer in 1989, acknowledged the magazine’s aesthetic appeal but ultimately believed the decision shoudl rest with each individual player.
Gwinn’s choice reflects a growing trend among female athletes who are prioritizing their athletic achievements and personal brand over traditional notions of femininity and objectification. Her focus on the field, coupled with her impressive comeback and Olympic success, serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes worldwide.

We also saw in the article that some professionals believe the decision ultimately rests with the individual. Where do you stand on this?
Lori: There’s a balance to be struck. Athletes should undoubtedly have the autonomy to make their own choices.
However, it’s crucial that they have the proper guidance and support systems in place to weigh the potential consequences of their decisions. It’s a complex landscape, particularly in the age of social media, and having a trusted team to advise them can be invaluable.
