haryana’s Badminton Boom: A New Generation Rises
Haryana, long recognized as a powerhouse in Indian sports like hockey, wrestling, and boxing,is witnessing a remarkable surge in women’s badminton. The recent Senior Nationals badminton championships served as a testament to this burgeoning talent, wiht Haryana clinching their first-ever team title and Devika Sihag securing the women’s singles crown. This victory marked a remarkable trifecta of national singles titles for Haryana, with Anmol Kharb and anupama Upadhyay claiming the previous two, solidifying the state’s dominance in the women’s game.
Adding to this impressive roster is the promising 17-year-old Unnati Hooda, further highlighting the depth of talent emerging from Haryana. Earlier this year, Anmol Kharb played a pivotal role in India’s gold medal victory at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia, showcasing her prowess on the international stage.
This surge in badminton success can be attributed to several factors. The establishment of ranking tournaments in North India has provided more opportunities for aspiring players, previously concentrated in Bengaluru and hyderabad.”The results we’ve seen in the past three years have been instrumental in fueling this growth,” explains Harender Singh Malik, coach at the Malik Badminton Academy in Sonipat. “Parents are now recognizing the potential for a future in badminton, leading to increased participation, especially at the U-11 level.”
Malik’s academy alone boasts five players who contributed to Haryana’s triumphant team at the Senior Nationals, highlighting the crucial role private academies play in nurturing talent.
“While government centers were once the primary source of training, private academies offer a more focused and personalized approach,” Malik observes.
The impressive performances of Haryana’s young shuttlers have not gone unnoticed. With the likes of Anmol Kharb and Unnati Hooda leading the charge, the future of Indian badminton looks radiant.
“These girls possess the potential to become the next Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu,” says Haryana coach ravikant Singla. “Their dedication and passion are evident, but sustained hard work and commitment will be crucial for their continued success.”
However, the transition from junior to senior competition presents unique challenges.
“Adapting to the increased intensity, higher quality of opponents, and the risk of injuries are all hurdles these young athletes must overcome,” Malik cautions. “The next two years will be critical in determining their trajectory.”
As Haryana’s badminton stars continue to shine, the nation eagerly awaits their ascent to the pinnacle of the sport, carrying the torch of excellence lit by their predecessors.
