Heracles Almelo vs. FC Groningen Match Abandoned Due to fan Unrest
The highly anticipated match between heracles Almelo and FC Groningen ended abruptly on December 21st, 2024, due to escalating fan disturbances both inside and outside the stadium. The decision to permanently halt the game, which was tied 1-1 at the time, was made on the orders of public order officials, citing safety concerns.
Tensions flared in the away section approximately ten minutes before the final whistle. Safety coordinator Rob Dieperink alerted the referee to the escalating situation, prompting the initial stoppage. While there were initial hopes of resuming play, the decision was ultimately made to abandon the match entirely.
Rob Toussaint, Heracles’ general manager, confirmed the decision on ESPN, stating, “On the orders of public order, it has been decided that we will not continue.” Dieperink further elaborated, suggesting that the sounds emanating from the away section resembled someone falling from the exit area.
The away section was subsequently cleared, with fans returning to Groningen. Toussaint attributed the decision to the unrest outside the stadium, emphasizing that public safety was paramount.
Frank van Mosselveld, general manager of FC Groningen, expressed his disappointment, calling the situation “regrettable,” especially given the proximity to Christmas. He acknowledged the lack of significant incidents prior to the disturbance, lamenting the unfortunate turn of events.
Van Mosselveld also highlighted the refusal of away fans to leave the stadium as a contributing factor to the safety concerns. He emphasized the shared sense of loss, stating, “I think there are only losers here, we tried to do everything we could to restart the match. It’s a defeat for all of us that we couldn’t continue.”
The KNVB will determine the fate of the remaining match time at a later date. The match, which saw goals from Luka Kulenovic and Romano Postema, was poised for an exciting finish before the unfortunate events unfolded.
Heracles players took to the field to express their gratitude to the remaining fans, leaving the future of the match hanging in the balance.
A Match Abandoned: A Conversation with Former Striker Marco van Basten
The recent abandonment of the Heracles Almelo vs. FC Groningen match due to fan unrest has sent shockwaves through the Dutch football community. Today, we’re joined by former Dutch legend and three-time Ballon d’or winner, Marco van Basten, to discuss this disappointing incident and the broader implications for fan behavior in stadiums.
Moderator: Marco, thanks for joining us today. The scenes from Groningen were disturbing. What were yoru initial thoughts when you heard the news?
Marco van Basten:
Its incredibly saddening. football is supposed to be a party of passion and camaraderie. To see a match descend into chaos like this, it’s a black mark on the sport we all love. We must remember that these are events for families, for children – everyone should feel safe attending.
Moderator: Absolutely. The safety of fans and players should always be paramount. Fan unrest is becoming an increasingly concerning issue across football. From your experience, both as a player and now as a commentator, what do you think is contributing to this?
Marco van Basten:
I think there are several contributing factors. The rise of social media has definitely played a role. Anonymity online emboldens some individuals to make threats and incite violence that they wouldn’t dare express face-to-face.
There’s also a growing sense of entitlement amongst some fans.Clubs need to do a better job of managing expectations and fostering a more respectful surroundings within stadiums. We need to remind people that booing the opposition or expressing frustration is acceptable within reason, but resorting to violence is never the answer.
Moderator: I agree. The KNVB will be deciding the fate of the remaining match time. Some argue that replaying the match rewards the disruptive behavior. Where do you stand on this issue?
Marco van Basten:
That’s a tricky one. I understand the sentiment that replaying the match condones the actions of those fans who caused the abandonment.
Personally, I believe that athletes deserve the prospect to compete and finish what they started. However, there needs to be a consequential punishment for the fans involved. Maybe a meaningful portion of the stadium is closed off for the replayed match, or there are increased security measures.
This situation requires a balance – punishing those responsible while not penalizing the players and teams who were hoping to showcase their skills.
Moderator:
Well said, Marco. This incident has sparked a broader debate about the role of security measures and the duty of clubs to prevent such disturbances. What are your thoughts on the role of clubs in managing fan behavior?
Marco van Basten:
Clubs have a significant responsibility. They are ultimately responsible for the atmosphere within their stadiums.
this includes actively engaging with supporter groups, addressing grievances proportionally, and implementing robust security measures. Early intervention is crucial.Security personnel need to be trained to identify potential troublemakers before situations escalate.
But it’s a two-way street.Fans need to be held accountable for their actions.
(Looking directly at the camera) To those who think violence is acceptable at football matches, I say: think again. You’re ruining the Gorgeous Game for everyone.

Powerful words, Marco. This certainly is a topic that requires ongoing dialog and action. We appreciate your candid insights.
