Tottori Johoku’s Historic Run Ends in Winter Cup Final
Teh 2023 Winter Cup concluded with a dominant performance by Fukuoka Ohori, who secured their fourth national championship title in three years. They defeated a determined Tottori Johoku squad 77-57 in the men’s final held at the Tokyo Metropolitan gymnasium on January 29th.
This marked Tottori Johoku’s first-ever appearance in the Winter Cup finals, a remarkable achievement for a school making history for their prefecture. Despite the loss, their journey was nothing short of inspiring. They overcame formidable opponents, including the reigning champions, Fukuoka Daiichi, showcasing their resilience and talent.
The game itself was a tale of two halves. Tottori Johoku briefly seized the lead in the second quarter,engaging in a thrilling back-and-forth battle with Fukuoka Ohori. However, Fukuoka Ohori’s experience and tactical prowess proved decisive.They extended their lead to 10 points by halftime and maintained their momentum throughout the second half, ultimately securing a 20-point victory.
Reflecting on the game, Tottori Johoku’s coach, Takahiro Kawakami, acknowledged Fukuoka Ohori’s superior performance. “Ohori has substantially improved since the summer,” he stated. “We were unable to fully implement our game plan and struggled with both offensive and defensive rebounds, leading to crucial points for our opponents.”
Despite the disappointment of the loss, Coach kawakami expressed immense pride in his team’s accomplishments. “Reaching the finals was a remarkable achievement, especially considering the perception of Tottori basketball,” he said. “Our players defied expectations and demonstrated remarkable growth throughout the tournament.This experience will undoubtedly fuel our ambition to elevate Tottori’s basketball standing.”

Kenji Nakagawa: Ohori is a powerhouse, no question. Their experience shone thru, especially in the second half.But I truly admire Tottori Johoku’s journey. For a school making its first-ever Winter Cup finals appearance, reaching this stage is nothing short of remarkable.
Modrator: Absolutely. Reaching the finals is a major accomplishment,and Coach Takahiro Kawakami emphasized the importance of this achievement for Tottori basketball’s image. Do you think this performance will inspire more young athletes in the prefecture?
Kenji Nakagawa: Definitely. This team defied expectations and showed that with hard work and dedication, anything is absolutely possible. it’s a huge motivator for young players in Tottori and across Japan. This exposure on a national stage will undoubtedly inspire a new generation.

Kenji Nakagawa: Rebounding is crucial, especially against a team as strong as Fukuoka Ohori.Thay’re known for their physicality and strength on the boards. While Tottori Johoku showed flashes of brilliance, Ohori’s dominance in rebounding ultimately gave them the edge they needed.

Kenji Nakagawa: Consistency, coaching, and a talented roster.Ohori has built a strong program with a winning culture. Their coach is excellent at identifying and developing talent, and they consistently recruit top players. It’s a formula for success.
Moderator: Now, let’s look at Tottori Johoku. They had some standout performers like Isamu Shintani and Harold Azuka. What did you think of their performance in the tournament?
Kenji Nakagawa: Shintani and Azuka were fantastic! Shintani’s leadership and Azuka’s athleticism were key to Tottori’s success. They showed great composure and skill throughout the tournament, and I believe they have bright futures ahead of them.
