To get the inside scoop on the team’s aspirations and the significance of this camp, we sat down with one of Austria’s judo superstars, Shamil Borchashvili. An accomplished judoka with a string of victories under his belt, Shamil brings a wealth of experience and insight to the discussion.
Welcome, Shamil! Let’s jump right in. This Linz training camp seems like quite an undertaking – six intense training sessions over just a few days. How crucial is this early-season camp in shaping the team’s performance throughout the year?
“This camp is absolutely vital. It’s our chance to hit the ground running, shake off the rust from the holidays, and really lay the foundation for the year ahead. These intense sessions allow us to work on our technique, build our endurance, and most importantly, solidify that team spirit that’s so essential in judo.”
You’ve competed at the highest level, including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. How do these early training camps compare to the pressure cooker surroundings of a major competition?
“Honestly, there’s a different kind of pressure. While the Olympics obviously carry immense weight, these camps are about building a strong base. We’re pushing each other, refining our techniques, and developing that mental toughness that’s essential for those crucial moments in competition. The atmosphere is intense, but it’s also incredibly focused and supportive. We’re all in this together.”
With Paris 2024 on the horizon, the whole nation’s hopes are pinned on the Austrian judo team. Do you feel that weight?
“Of course, we feel the pressure, but we embrace it. We know what’s at stake, and we’re committed to giving it our all. The support from Austria is astonishing, and we draw strength from knowing that the whole country is behind us. We’re steadfast to make them proud.”
Looking at the roster for this camp, there’s a unique blend of established champions like yourself and promising young judoka. What’s it like training alongside the next generation of talent?
“It’s truly inspiring. They bring a fresh energy and enthusiasm to the mat. I see myself in them, that fire to succeed, and I’m always eager to share my knowledge and experience. This mix of veterans and newcomers creates a dynamic atmosphere that pushes everyone to improve.”
What’s your advice to those young aspiring judoka who dream of representing Austria on the international stage?
“Never give up on your dreams. Judo teaches you discipline, resilience, and respect. Embrace those values, train hard, and believe in yourself. The journey won’t be easy, but the rewards are incredible. And remember, the Austrian Judo community is behind you every step of the way.”
