Back From Injury, But Can Pöltl Stop the Bleeding in Toronto?
A conversation with Former Raptors Coach Dwane Casey
The Toronto Raptors continue to spiral, swallowing their tenth consecutive loss after a tough 136-107 defeat against the Atlanta Hawks. While the return of center Jakob Pöltl, who added a respectable 13 points and six rebounds in his comeback from a groin injury, is a glimmer of hope, concerns are mounting in the True North.
To delve deeper into the Raptors’ struggles and discuss the potential impact of Pöltl’s return,we sat down with former head coach Dwane Casey, who guided the Raptors to their lone NBA championship appearance in 2019. Coach Casey, known for his defensive acumen and player advancement, offered insightful perspectives on the team’s current state.
Moderator: Coach Casey, it’s always a pleasure. We saw Pöltl back on the court after a two-week absence. How significant is his return for this Raptors team right now?
Dwane Casey: Jakob’s presence on the court is essential for the Raptors. He brings much-needed size, defensive anchoring, and a calming presence in the paint. his basketball IQ is outstanding, and his ability to finish around the basket, along with his passing skills, can really open up the offense.
Moderator: Despite Pöltl’s contributions, the turnovers were a major thorn in the Raptors’ side, totalling a whopping 31 against the Hawks. What are yoru thoughts on this recurring issue?
Dwane Casey: Turnovers have plagued the Raptors throughout the season. It speaks to a lack of focus and ball security. You can’t expect to win games when you’re giving the opponent that many extra possessions.Coach Nurse will need to address this urgently through film study, drills, and perhaps even adjustments to the offensive scheme.
Moderator: Looking at the bigger picture,10 straight losses is a worrying trend for any team. What are the key areas the Raptors need to address to turn things around?
Dwane Casey: The Raptors need to rediscover their defensive identity. they need to get back to playing with that grit and determination that was a hallmark of the championship team and recent prosperous seasons. Offensively, they need to find more consistency. They’ve shown glimpses of brilliance, but need to find a rhythm and stick to their strengths.
Moderator: Can Pöltl, even with his impressive skillset, be the sole catalyst for a turnaround, or does the onus lie heavier on other players to step up too?
Dwane Casey: Pöltl can certainly play a significant role in turning the tide, but it’s going to take a collective effort. Young players like Scottie Barnes and Gary Trent Jr. need to step up their leadership and consistency. Veteran players like Fred VanVleet need to guide the team and make those clutch plays.
Moderator: The Raptors have a tough matchup against the celtics on New Year’s Eve. What key adjustments do they need to make to possibly pull off an upset?
Dwane Casey: The Celtics are a risky team. They will exploit the Raptors’ weaknesses if given the chance. Coach Nurse needs to find a way to limit Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown’s scoring opportunities. He might consider a zone defense to clog the paint and disrupt their rhythm. Offensively, the Raptors need to move the ball quickly and efficiently to create open looks.
