The football world was abuzz this week with the news of Osijek’s Sports Director,Jose Boto, departing for Brazilian giants Flamengo.
To dissect this growth and its implications for Osijek, we sat down with former Croatian international and footballing legend, Robert Prosinečki.
Moderator: Robert, thanks for joining us today. osijek has seen a lot of changes recently, and Boto’s departure adds another layer of complexity. What are your initial thoughts on this?
Robert Prosinečki: It’s certainly a surprising move, especially given Boto’s relatively short tenure. However, Flamengo is a club of enormous stature, and the lure of working in South America for a team like them is understandable.
Moderator: Indeed.boto’s contract was set to run until 2025. Do you think Osijek should feel let down by this early departure?
RP: I wouldn’t necessarily say “let down.” Football is a fluid business, and contracts don’t always bind people for their entirety. Osijek clearly saw value in Boto, bringing him in as Sports Director, and while his time was brief, they benefitted from his expertise.
Moderator: What impact do you think this will have on Osijek going forward? Losing a Sports Director mid-season can be disruptive.
RP: It’s true, it can be disruptive, but osijek is a club with a history of resilience. They’ve dealt with challenges before and emerged stronger. What’s crucial now is finding a suitable replacement swiftly, someone who understands the club’s vision and can build on the foundations laid by Boto.
Moderator: Absolutely. Speaking of vision, do you think Boto’s departure signifies a shift in Osijek’s strategy or ambitions?
RP: It’s arduous to say for sure at this stage.Boto had a specific vision for the club, but ultimately, it’s up to the board and the new Sports Director to determine the path forward. Osijek has been making strides in recent years, and I hope this transition doesn’t derail their progress.
Moderator: You mentioned Osijek’s progress. They’ve enjoyed some success recently, notably in the Croatian First Football League. do you think this departure will harm their momentum?
RP: It could potentially have a short-term impact, as settling on a new leadership structure takes time. However, Osijek has a strong squad and a dedicated fan base. I believe they have the ability to whether this change and continue pushing for success.
Moderator: Robert, what advice woudl you give to the Osijek board as they seek a new Sports Director?
RP: I’d encourage them to look for someone with a proven track record of success, someone who understands the Croatian league and can identify and develop talent. But just as importantly, they need someone who aligns with the club’s values and is committed to long-term growth.
Moderator: wise words, Robert. Thank you for sharing your insights with us today.
RP: My pleasure.
