The Para badminton arena at Porte de la Chapelle witnessed an unexpected guest on Thursday, August 29th: Jürgen Klopp. The renowned German football manager, recently departed from Liverpool FC, was there to cheer on his longtime friend, Wojtek Czyz.
Czyz, a former footballer, faced a career-altering knee injury that resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee. It was during this challenging period that he forged a strong bond with Klopp, who was just beginning his coaching journey.
Already a four-time Paralympic champion in athletics (100m, 200m, and twice in long jump), Czyz set his sights on a new challenge in 2021: competing in Para badminton at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
his audacious goal became a reality as he took to the court on August 29th. “I started from scratch,” czyz shared. “Two years ago, people would have wondered what I was doing. Today, I’m competing alongside the world’s best players as New Zealand’s first Para badminton representative. I’m incredibly proud.” His journey exemplifies the resilience and determination of Paralympic athletes, inspiring countless others to overcome adversity and pursue their dreams.

Interviewer: Wojtek, your story has already inspired so many. Can you tell us about the moment you knew you wouldn’t be able to return to professional football?
Wojtek: To be honest, there wasn’t one specific moment. It was a series of discussions with doctors and specialists, realizing that the recovery wouldn’t allow me to play at the level I was used to. It was devastating, but Jürgen helped me see it as an opportunity, not the end.
Interviewer: Indeed, Jürgen Klopp’s support throughout this period is remarkable. How did his friendship impact your decision to pursue Para badminton?
Wojtek: Jürgen has always been incredibly supportive, not just as a coach but as a friend. When my football career ended, he encouraged me to find something I was passionate about and go after it. Wojtek: Never give up on your dreams. Adversity is a part of life, but it doesn’t define you. Find your passion, surround yourself with supportive people, and keep pushing forward. You might surprise yourself with what you can achieve.
