Tigres del Licey signs an old acquaintance
“We are hiring an experienced player who knows the league, is coming off an exceptional summer and we understand that he can help improve our organization’s offense,” vice president of operations and general manager Audo Vicente said in a press release.
According to the information provided by the club’s management, Martin will arrive in the Dominican Republic on Monday to report to the team and will be activated when the coaching staff deems it appropriate, so it could take a few days for him to be integrated into the lineup.
For Martin it is a long return to the Dominican Republic and, especially, with Licey, the same team with which he played three previous seasons in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16. In these tournaments he accumulated an average of .231 with 7 doubles, 5 home runs and 22 runs produced in a total of 53 games; his best year was in 2012-13 when he hit .253.
Statistics of Leonys Martín, new reinforcement of Licey
Martin had a great summer in Mexico, but he did not have the same luck when he started the fall in Venezuela.
With the Mexican Conspirators he was one of the main faces of the expansion franchise by finishing as the second player with the most home runs (29) and runs scored (94) in the entire league, only one less than his teammate and leader Yurisbel Gracial. He was also in the Top 10 in RBI (74), slugging (5th, .630), OPS (6th 1,040) and extra-base hits (7th, 42). All this in a city approximately 2,294 meters above sea level, where the ball flies the most.
However, he was unable to replicate his success with the Venezuelan Sharks this fall at sea level. In 38 games he posted a .203 average while hitting 28-for-138; He hit 6 doubles and 8 home runs.
