Thuram on racism,Fashion, and Following in Henry’s Footsteps
Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram, currently enjoying a stellar season with 13 goals and 6 assists in 21 matches, recently opened up about a range of topics in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.
One of the most meaningful discussions revolved around his public stance against France’s National Rally (RN) during the June and July 2024 legislative elections. Thuram, alongside fellow French international Kylian Mbappé, felt compelled to speak out against the party, emphasizing the importance of addressing racism and intolerance.
“It felt natural for Kylian and me to take a stand,” Thuram explained. “As young Black men, we understood the gravity of the situation and felt it was crucial to voice our concerns.”
While Thuram hasn’t personally experienced racism in Italy, unlike some of his fellow players, he made it clear that he wouldn’t hesitate to speak out if he did. “I’ve always been vocal about issues I find unjust,” he stated. “I believe in using my platform to advocate for positive change.”
Beyond the pitch, Thuram revealed his passion for fashion, admitting to receiving modeling offers but preferring to keep it as a hobby for now. Though, he hinted at a potential post-retirement career path inspired by Thierry Henry’s successful transition to American television commentary.
“I admire Titi Henry’s work with CBS,” Thuram shared.”The more relaxed commentary style in the US appeals to me. Plus, I’ve always dreamed of living there.”
Currently thriving in Italy, Thuram carries the weight of a legendary surname. His father, Lilian thuram, etched his name in Serie A history with Parma and Juventus.
“My father prepared me for the scrutiny that comes with our last name,” Thuram admitted. “He warned me that people would judge me based on who I am,not on my own merits.”
Adding to the family legacy, Thuram’s younger brother, Khéphren, recently joined Juventus. “He’s incredibly talented,” Thuram proudly proclaimed. “He’s benefited from learning from both our father and me,which gives him a unique advantage.”
