Matteo Berrettini was named Comeback Player of the Year after a remarkable season in which he was inactive for six months. The Italian won three titles this year, a number bettered only by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, and climbed to over 100 places in the ATP rankings.
The 2021 Wimbledon runner-up spent much of 2023 sidelined with injury and found himself outside the top 150 until March. However, he was able to achieve consistent results again and took part in Challenger tournaments, where he won a title in Phoenix.
Berrettini named comeback player
Berrettini’s ATP titles came a few weeks later, in early April. After the Sunshine Double, he returned to the winner’s circle by defeating Roberto Carballés Baena in the final of the ATP 250 Marrakech Open.
He later secured the titles at the Swiss Open Gstaad and the Kitzbühel Open and reached a 10-match winning streak before losing to Holger Rune in the first round of the Cincinnati Open. During the grass season he also reached the final of the Stuttgart Open, where he lost to Jack Draper.
“I’m just so happy that I won the Comeback Player of the Year award,” Berrettini said in a message to fans. “Thank you very much for the support. It was a great season, a great achievement for me and my team. Of course I’m happy with the results we achieved and I can’t wait to be back on the pitch in 2025 to celebrate further successes.”
“Thank you again for your support. Without you, the fans, this wouldn’t be possible,” concluded the world number 34.
Berrettini will return to the tour on December 29 at the Brisbane International, where he will face the likes of Novak Djokovic, Holger Rune, Grigor Dimitrov and the returning Nick Kyrgios.
