Mexican Women’s archery Team Makes History wiht Bronze Medal in Paris
The Mexican women’s archery team etched their names in Olympic history on Sunday, securing the nation’s first medal at the Paris Games with a resounding 6-2 victory over the Netherlands in the bronze medal match.
The trio of Alejandra Valencia, Ángela Ruiz, and Ana Paula Vázquez triumphed over Quinty Roeffen, Gaby Schloesser, and Laura van der Winkel in a thrilling contest, winning sets with scores of 57-50, 54-56, 56-53, and 57-52. This victory marks Mexico’s fourth-ever Olympic medal in archery and the first ever for a women’s team.
South Korea dominated the competition, claiming the gold medal after defeating China in the final.
Valencia, a seasoned Olympian, celebrated this achievement as a historic moment, expressing her elation at sharing it with her teammates. This bronze medal adds to her impressive collection, making her the fourth Mexican woman to win two or more Olympic medals. She joins the ranks of Alejandra Orozco (London 2012 and Tokyo 2020), Paola Espinosa (Beijing 2008 and London 2012), and María del Rosario Espinoza (Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016).
This victory is especially significant for Ruiz, who not only made her Olympic debut but also secured a medal on her 18th birthday. Overwhelmed with joy, she expressed her excitement at fulfilling their pre-competition goal of returning to the Olympic village with a medal.
Mexico’s archery program has consistently produced talented athletes, with Aída Román and Mariana Avitia winning silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the individual women’s event at the London 2012 Games. Valencia herself secured a bronze medal in the mixed team event alongside Luis Álvarez at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
