In a show of respect, both Cliftonville and Newberry’s former club, Linfield, postponed their scheduled league matches on Monday. Cliftonville released a statement expressing their deepest condolences to Newberry’s family, friends, teammates, and fans, acknowledging the profound impact of this heartbreaking news. The Irish League also extended their sympathies to Newberry’s loved ones and the Cliftonville Football Club community during this challenging time.
Newberry, a Newcastle native who represented Northern ireland’s U-21 national team, began his promising career at Newcastle United. Although he didn’t break into the professional ranks at Newcastle, Newberry’s talent shone through during his time playing for Víkingur Ólafsvík in Iceland and FC Linfield in Northern Ireland, where he secured two league titles. He joined Cliftonville FC this past summer and made 24 appearances for the club.
