Kramer Open to Mid-Season Move Amidst RKC Struggles
Veteran striker Michiel Kramer, currently facing limited playing time at Eredivisie strugglers RKC Waalwijk, has hinted at a potential departure during the January transfer window. The 36-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of the season, was linked with Keuken Kampioen divisie title contenders Excelsior by regional broadcaster rijnmond.During a recent interview, Kramer was presented with the prospect of joining Excelsior, especially considering the injury sustained by their forward, Omorowa. “I wouldn’t immediately dismiss a move to a club competing at the top of the KKD,” Kramer admitted, acknowledging Excelsior’s current second-place standing.
“It’s a viable option.I feel good and believe I can still contribute,” he added. As of January 1st, Kramer will be free to negotiate with other clubs.
While Kramer remains a professional footballer, he recognizes that his playing days are nearing their end. He’s already begun contemplating his post-football career, expressing interest in becoming a football analyst, a role he’s occasionally filled for Rijnmond.
Interestingly, Kramer has also warmed to the idea of coaching. Initially resistant to the idea, his experience coaching his son’s Under 13-2 team at Smitshoek has sparked a newfound enthusiasm for the profession.
Throughout his extensive career, Kramer has represented eight clubs across various leagues. ADO Den Haag stands out as the only club he’s played for in two separate stints. His journey has also taken him to NAC Breda, FC Volendam, feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam, Maccabi Haifa, FC Utrecht, and his current club, RKC Waalwijk.
Michiel Kramer: A Veteran Striker Weighs His options
Welcome back to The Sports Hour, everyone! Today we have a true Dutch football icon joining us,the one and only Michiel Kramer. Michiel, thanks for being here.
Michiel kramer: It’s a pleasure to be here.
Let’s jump right into it. There’s been a lot of talk about your future recently, especially with the news of your potential move during the January transfer window.
MK: Yeah, it’s no secret that things haven’t been ideal at RKC this season. I’m not getting the minutes I’d like, and at 36, time is ticking.I still feel I have plenty to offer, and the possibility to join a top contender like Excelsior is certainly tempting.
That’s interesting as you mentioned Excelsior specifically. They’re currently second in the Keuken Kampioen divisie, with their forward Omorowa recently injured. Do you think you could make a real impact there, even at this stage in your career?
MK: Absolutely. I’ve always prided myself on my ability to adapt and contribute. I know the KKD well, and there’s there’s no doubt whatsoever I could still bag some goals and help them push for promotion.
But surely a move to a second division club feels like a step down for someone with your experience, right? You’ve played for some big names during your career.
MK: Football is a funny game. It’s not always about the name on the jersey. It’s about being part of a team that’s enterprising, where you feel valued. Of course, I’ve played at a high level, but right now, winning and playing regular football are my priorities.
Now, looking beyond your playing days, you’ve mentioned exploring opportunities as a football analyst and even coaching your son’s team seems to have sparked a passion. Can you elaborate on that?
MK:
Yes, absolutely. I’ve always enjoyed sharing my knowledge of the game, and doing some analysis for Rijnmond has been a great experience. It’s fascinating to break down tactics and analyze performances. As for coaching, I never thought it would click with me, but working with my son’s team has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing these young players develop and learn is truly inspiring.
So it seems like you’re incredibly well-prepared for life after football. You’ve got options, both on and off the pitch. Is there any particular path you’re leaning towards?
MK: honestly, I haven’t made any firm decisions yet. I’m just taking it one day at a time, focusing on the present. But it’s great to have these options and know that I have a shining future ahead, nonetheless of what I decide.
Michiel, thank you so much for your time and your insights. I’m sure our viewers will appreciate your candor. What do you think about Michiel’s potential move to Excelsior? Do you think it’s the right decision for him at this stage in his career?
