MLB: A ball worth more than $2M (baseball)

Freddie Freeman’s grand slam ball that ended Game 1 of the last World Series was sold for the tidy sum of $1.56 million US, or a little over $2.22 million Canadian.

The auction house SCP Auction confirmed everything on Sunday morning, after the acquisition on Saturday evening. However, the identity of the buyer has not been revealed.

This iconic home run was a highlight of the past sports year. Annoyed by a sprained right ankle, Freeman still played in the playoffs.

At the end of 10e inning, during the first game of the final, Freeman came to bat with the bases loaded. He made short work of Nestor Cortes’ first shot before raising his right arm knowing full well where the ball was going to end up, more than 400 feet from its starting point.

This bomb gave the Dodgers their first victory at home, before continuing and winning the big honors in five games against the New York Yankees.

It’s the second ball hit by a Dodgers player this year to sell for an astronomical sum at auction. A few weeks earlier, the ball of 50e Shohei Ohtani’s 50-50 season circuit was sold for just under $4.4 million US, or $6.25 million Canadian.
